I love gel nails! They last me at least 2 weeks, if not almost 3. It is not as harsh as acrylic, and the process is more like getting several coats of polish. Each coat is ‘set’ by UV light, which takes a few minutes between each coat. The best part is you can use your hands immediately 🙂

Make sure they do thin layers, though. If you get an inexperienced person, the application can be thick and clunky. Your nails should seem like a more durable version of a natural nail. Good luck!

Oh, and I should mention that the removal process is pretty easy as well. You soak in acetone and the gel softens for them to gently scrape it off. Then you can get a regular manicure or apply gel again.

I second the positive review for the gel nails, and the recommendation to go with an experienced nail tech. They shouldn’t have to cut down your nails at all; it goes on like polish, not like acrylic. They lasted about two weeks, but I did find that they eventually start to peel (vs. chip) and if you peel them off they do some slight damage to the nail (nothing like acrylics). Better to soak them off.

I have long natural nails also.  I went in just last week and they only shaped them.  They made them look square. So no, they do not have to file them down!!!! I LOVE them!!!

I just recently started getting gel manicures.. like about a month ago.  I LOVE it!  I will never get acrylic again.  They will not file your nails down for gel, unless you want them shaped or something… like a PP said, it’s more like a thick coat of nail polish that goes over whatever your current nail shape is.  It is not damaging like acrylics are… I love it because my natural nails are flimsy and this has allowed them to get longer than they’ve ever been because the gel makes them a lot harder than they are on their own.  I say go for it!

I just got gel nails a couple days ago and so far, so good!  I mess up regular manicures in about a day.  They have some that are actually “fake nails” but I got a french manicure with the gel polish and I’m hoping it allows my nails to grow longer and I will just keep doing it!

Date twins! I just got my gel nails done yesterday and I’m obsessed. I got to get crafty last night (not a euphemism) and didn’t have to worry about any chipping. Totally worth it! They only shaped my nails and made them all nice and even like a regular manicure, didn’t have to cut them at all actually. They’re much more gentle than acrylic, I had the same problem with acrylics and I’d never ever do those again.

Try to find a salon that uses axium by opi it is a gel system. I am i love, its more like a polish that they cure under the uv lights to harden. and it doesnt ruin your nails

I also want to know more about gel nails. I have short nails and would want a little length added. Is that possible with gel?

As far as I know, no tips for added length are not used with gel polish. It’s just a different kind of nail polish, not an artificial nail.

I know from experience that Shellac is an amazing brand, and I have heard good things about Axxium.

I guess, based on all your positive experiences, I should try gel nails again.  I had them done once and, although the manicure lasted, it took forever to get all the gel off parts of my nails.  My nails just looked bumpy and weird for a while.  And they were pretty damamged after.  But maybe I just went to the wrong salon.
