If you do it to both either one can cash it. And I would use her maiden name because im sure she hasnt changed her name yet.
If you know she goes thru the ATM chris or christina wont matter
Chris versus Christina shouldn't matter
if you do it to both they need to have a joint account. If they don't have an account together they will make a copy of your marriage certificate and copy that way. I always just give cash :)
I would say definitely either her maiden name or his name. No need to do both, as I'm sure that they're not going to hide it from each other. :-) Don't use her married name as if it's not changed yet, the bank won't cash it!
I'd write it out to Christina Maiden OR Joe Smith. That way either of them can cash it.
If you make it out to both then they both have to sign it. I'd make it out to whoever you are closest to (if it's her use her maiden name).
I would write it to both but make sure you put an "or" in between. Ex. John Smith or Jane Doe
That should eliminate a lot of the problems people have with cashing checks.
Make it out to your friend -- if it's her, her maiden name. If him, his name. Write a note and tuck it in the envelope saying it's meant for both.
Uh oh, I made it out to both of them, using her maiden name, I hope they don't have problems cashing it!
As long as they have a joint account, it should be fine.
Or if they deposit the checks into an ATM (like we did), no one will probably notice.
I used to work for a bank and if it was made out to two people, they both had to sign it AND both their names had to be on the account. It was a huge national bank and even in the ATM, customers would get their check mailed back to them, money deducted from their account, and then they would call and flip out. They have no way to verify the other person's signature if their name isn't on the account, so says the policy.
Hmm not sure if my bank let it slide because they were a local credit union or not but we did both sign the back of the check even if we weren't both on the account.
@MissAsB: They may have! Trust me, I switched to a credit union after I stopped working at the bank for MANY reasons :)
@farfromordinarybride: That hasn't been the case in my experience. We've gotten several checks written out to both of us, and I've been able to deposit them all into my personal account without any problems.
Update: The check successfully came out of our account, so obviously in this case there were no issues with making it out to both people :)

We're going to a friend's wedding today. Who do I make the check out to? Both of them with her maiden name? Just one? I want to make sure they can easily cash it. And if their name is say, Christina and they go by Chris, can you write the shortened version?
