Do you have a picture of the space? It's hard to make suggestions when i can't really visualize the problem.
You can use ribbon to block off the sides so that everyone sits in the middle. Perhaps even using tulle and "draping" it. Use pomanders at the ends of the aisles.
For the front, is there any type of curtain? What about something like this? They sell pillars cheap at Hobby Lobby & you could just drape fabric.
@mcnetn3: I'll dig out a picture of a similar space if I can, since I didn't get a chance to take any pictures when I was there last.
@nycbrde2011: We picked it for a few reasons, the main one being that it's extremely close to our home (within a few miles) and pretty much every other choice we had would have blown our budget and were quite a distance away. While we're still holding out hope that it won't be blizzard-like conditions, the chance is still there and we were happy enough just to get a free place to hold our wedding and reception.
@MasqueradeMom: That's pretty, but I was thinking something with a little lighter feel maybe, but I'm thinking that maybe I need to pick up a pretty aisle runner.
Im having the same issue, our church is really plain as well. I think im just gonna decorate the aisles with tulle and maybe DIY pomanders since large floral arrangements are out of the budget.
Our church was waaaay bigger than we needed. But it's our home church that we go to, so it was really the only option. The church has 40 pews and we only filled like 4 or 5 on each side. It looked pretty empty when I walked in, but I wasn't really thinking about that...
For us, our church is our part-time home church as well. We go to church there half the time. FI's family has been going there for 25 years and has deep roots there. It has historical significance that is very important to FI and I (first Catholic church for slaves built in the area). yeah we could go find a bigger, prettier church; maybe one of the Basilica's in the area, but the emotional significance would not be the same.
You can use ribbon rather than tulle to block off the aisle. That would be lighter.
Do you have ushers? They can ask everyone to move to the middle of the center pews.
@Aubergold: Yea, our flowers are already ordered, so I can't add more to them now, but I'm thinking that maybe we'll do some cute ribbon garlands or something down the sides just to make it easy for everyone who's helping me decorate the night before.
Oh and that picture is from allaboutmormons.com just in case anyone is wondering.
I like MasqueradeMom idea. Maybe have the bigger decorations outside the aisles instead of inner. The inner aisle can be lighter with tulle blocking of the back pew and aisle decorations.
@kate9854: I really like that...I'm thinking maybe do that on the outside two, with some fake flowers maybe to decorate each pew or something...huh, I think a trip to the fabric store may be in order for this.
Ok, so I picked up some fabric, but I'm going back because I realized I'd much rather use it for an aisle runnr than for the pews. It's just such beautiful lace. So I'm thinking a slightly off white solid fabric for the pews, but I'm having trouble deciding what to do for the decorations of each pew. I want it to be fairly simple, because I'd much rather spend time with my family thab have to take tons of time decorating each pew then having to undecorate them the next day lol

Since I have been rather adamant that we get married in the chapel and not in the gym of the church we're using I have a bit of a problem to overcome...it's not pretty. The chapel is very utilitarian and designed with three rows of pews: one wide row and two skinny rows on each side. There's a lot of dark wood and in reality, way too much room for our 40 guests.
Any suggestions for how to pretty it up and maybe constrict people to just the center row so that they're not super spread out?
