ok, so I have always wanted to do a half marathon but never had the guts to sign up. A few month ago I did 🙂 I have never done a race or really any running at all. I played sports all through out school and I am a frequent gym goer but I am very much over weight…which obviously was my main concern. BUT….
I DID IT! I trained by myself for 3 months, did 2 5k’s, a 10k and the half marathon today! I went from barly being able to run at all to running most of a half marathon (I walked at water breaks and pretty much the entire mile 10 and 11…hehe)
My goal was to finish and I did! I am pretty freaking proud of myself. I had so much energy and did so good the first 8 miles. At mile 7 I seriously cried because I was so proud that I was half way done and still was running like a champ! Man was I pumped…I was emotional for a bit but boy did i feel great!
But at the end of that 9th mile something happened. I got a really bad headache, I started noticing how bad my feet hurt (I have blisters on the balls of my feet), and my legs were screaming! Mile 9 was ok, but I could tell I am really starting to feel it…I slowed down..a lot. By the time I hit Mile 10 I was in pretty bad shape. Mile 11 was not any easier and Mile 12 was worse. But then I saw the finish line <.5 miles ahead and I seriously had to stop myself from crying. not because I was getting ready to accomplish this amazing goal…just because it was almost over and I could not wait!
Honestly until Mile 10, there was not a doubt in my mind I would not finish but once it poped in my head it kept growing from then. I really kept pushing myself though, I started running again as soon as I passed that Mile 12 sign and did not stop to walk (except for the water break) until I crossed that finish line. Boy did I think I was going to vomit and passout in front of all those people at the finish line. I was was just hoping I would vomit before I passed out…..not the other way around 🙂
But I did not vomit or passout. I ate a bunch of their free food (yogurt, banana, Gatorade, some kind of wheates cereal, and a piece of bread). I was searching for anything that might make me feel better 🙂 The food did not help, but about 30 min after I took a large dose of advil I was feeling a lot better.
Any other Bees done a half marathon or any other race that they would like to tell their story? I wanted to share my story for those who are maybe on the fence about training for one or who are currently preparing. 🙂
I am by no means an expert at Half marathons but here are some suggestions I have to new runners who are preparing for a big race:
Bring Advil with you to the race so you can take it immediately after with your food
Have someone drive you to the race and pick you up (i had problems driving home. i was a little shaky and a little out of it)
If you are one of those ppl who always have to have water/drink near by invest in a camelback! these things are amazing! do your training runs with it to get used to it. It is amazing! Everyone says there is plenty of water at the water stations but for me, a small cup of water every mile is not enough. I drank water at every water station and my entire camel back during the race!
Bring a tissue. In the morning it is usually chilly and your nose is going to run! I ran out of places on my shirt to whip my nose! 🙂 By Mile 7 I had no choice but to stop at a first aid station and get some tissues! That was time I could have been running (if you get a camelback you can store your tissues in there)
Have a very strong and organized playlist (if you like to listen to music while you run)
DO NOT WEAR NEW CLOTHES TO A HALF MARATHON. Make sure you have ran in yoru clothes before and you know they are comfortable. The last thing you want is to be tugging and pulling at your shirt and shorts while you run. I saw a lot of this today.
Rest the day before. Do not run! I rested two days before and had a really lite training week the week before. This does not make sense to me but believe me it helps!
And dont EXPECT to loose weight training for a half marathon. I thought I would loose so much weight. I did not loose a pound! 🙁 Honestly, I just ate more because I was running so much. If you dont increase your eating habbits then you probably will but dont think that just because you are running all the time you can eat whatever you want…it just does not work that way (atleast for me)
Thanks everyone! 🙂
Oh yeah, I finished in 2 hours and 59 minutes, with a pace of 13 minute miles. Not perfect but great for me! 🙂
