I thought this could be a really interesting topic. Do you have any well known people in your family? I am related to Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi who created the Statue of Liberty. He is my great great cousin. My grandfather was given the middle name of Fredrick because Bartholdi was my great grandma's favorite cousin. We also have a mini statue of liberty in my hometown that was donated by my family.
So bee's do you have any note worthy family members?
My grandmother and great aunts swear that we are related to Elvis. I've heard over and over again how our we are related to his mothers side. Who knows if this is true though. Either way its fun to watch a bunch of old ladies rant and rave about it! hehe
My maternal grandfather invented the integrated circuit (aka microchip) and was awarded a Nobel Prize for it, but I wouldn't go so far as to call him famous! ;-)
@artwyopie: That must make going to see her so much more fun! That's awesome!
@MissFlipFlops: Hah! That would be hilarious to listen to! And VERY fun if it were true. Is it an up-and-up connection or something more illicit?
No one is famous in my family, but my husband is related to John Vanderkolff who helped create and choreograph the musical BLAST! Not exactly super famous, but that's the best I can do. :-D
I'm related to John Tyler (10th President of the US) on my Father's side, but I'm not really sure how. I would like to know, but I don't speak to my father anymore and really don't know enough about that side of my family to start any kind of search.
My dad is cousins with Bill Barber, who played for the Phil. Flyers in the 70's and won 2 Stanley Cups with them :) Not really famous, but still pretty cool.
@caitlanc: yea. when I was in New York, my mom told me that i MUST is the statue. They say that the face is his mother's.... so it would be like seeing my great great great aunt. lol
I just asked SO if he was related to anyone famous and he said that his grandparents told him that they were related to John Quincy Adams (6th president), but he doesn't know for sure if that's true. It's weird that we'd both be related to US presidents:)
My great grandfather helped build the Titanic...although we joke that this might not be anything to brag about :P
People always ask if we're related to the shoe brand because our last name is Puma. But we don't actually know if there's a relation or not since it's split off Adidas and there's not really a name connection to the brand.
My friend who set us up told me DH was related to the shoe brand before I met him though!
My boyfriend's (so I guess not MY family...yet...) maternal line descends directly from Davy Crockett.
My paternal grandfather's brother owned the first fortune cookie factory in San Francisco.
One of my cousins (like...twice removed I guess?) is DJ Relm, an award winning DJ. I'm hoping for free wedding DJ service. ;-)
Not really anyone famous, but I guess ppl of note...? Sorta?
My like great great great great aunt was hung (hanged?) for being a witch during the Salem Witch Trials… thats all I got.
I'm related to Charles Dickens. My dad's mom was a Dickens and I guess one of our cousin's traced it all the way back to him!
I don't really, but my FI is related to Charles Dickens on his mom's side and Oliver Cromwell on his dad's...
@brittromance: cool!
My dad always said that we were related to Erik the Red ( the viking). lol. My dad is known for his stories. haha. We know that one isn't true.
My mom claims she is one of the chiefs of her village in Ghana. She be lying tho, so who knows....... I've never seen her in no chief attire.
Holy Moley!!! So in some way
@brittromance: and @melisandescott: are related (or soon to be) through Charles Dickens. Wow, meeting family on weddingbee. Who knew?!
@MademoiselleL: haha prolly not. But still very innovative for the times!
@SoontobeMrsA: that is cool!!!...ok it's actually morbid but you know what I mean.....hehe
The only person that I know about and is famous now is Joe Flacco - quarterback of the Ravens (hard loss tonight!) He is a cousin. I DO know that our family tree has been traced back to Swiss royalty. I'd love to do a family tree sort of things soon.
Oh I forgot to add, my last name is the name of a middle evil petty kingdom in Norway. I think it's like a county now in Norway. I could be from old Norwegian royalty. hehe :) I don't think so, but it would kinda cool.
@Aubergold:I live near Salem so we used to go on field trips there and it was like visiting a relative.
My mom likes to brag that Mark Twain (actual name name, Samuel Clemens) is her 9th great uncle, making him my 10th great uncle. Woopie.
Oh, and kanye west is my brother. LOL That's a joke....obviously....
My grandpas sister was a famous mexican singer, but I dont know much about her.
My FI is a decendant of Daniel boone
@MademoiselleL: That's hilarious!
@brittromance: @melisandescott: HAH! So you wouldn't think that it could get better than you two both linking to Charles Dickens but right next to each other!? Awesome!
J says he's related to Dany Heatley (hockey player - San Jose Sharks). They share the last name so he's convinced.
@brittromance: and @melisandescott: - how crazy is that. you guys are distant cousins!!! crazy!
My FI is related to the drummer in GWAR. It is his cousin Brad....I have not met him yet but we get offers to go to concerts all the time when they are near us performing. But not really my cup of tea :)
@pinkb: I definitely don't blame you on that. I hear their shows are pretty, uhm.. gruesome.. in a way. Nothing bad, but I've heard stories. Pretty cool though!
I totally forgot that my FI cousin was in Sparta, His name is Jim ward and he is really quiet and nice lol
I never even heard of Sparta before my FI, but aparently they were famous
@brittromance: How random!! My FI is related through one of Dickens' siblings (no idea which one); he just knows that Dickens mother is a great-great-x? grandmother
My grandfather was a second cousin to Jimmy Carter. Him and my grandmother were invited to the Inagural Ball.
@DesireeAnne: ya his "stage name" is Jizmak Da Gusha ....... lol. I have only heard stories and seen pictures of their shows and that was too much :)
Not celebrity famous, but my step brother in law is Obama's former White House General Counsel, and was also President Clinton's lawyer (he's also been a bunch of other people's lawyers too! lol)
I'm also related to Daniel Webster, of Webster's Dictionary fame, and Luke Perry, of 90's 90210 fame.
@pinkb: I can only imagine!
@gabrielleelise1981: Luke Perry? That's pretty cool. Hah.
@DesireeAnne: Heatley's awesome! I would totally go with that too. ;-) And he's with San Jose now? I am so far out of the loop!
@caitlanc: Yeah, he says it every time we catch a game with them "Welp, there goes my cousin. Scoring another goal". Hahaha. Maybe we'll send him a wedding invitation :P And yes, he was traded to the Sharks in 2009 for a three year deal.
so many indirectly famous people. Ooooooo. :-) Funny how many sports connections!
I don't know what the connection is exactly, some kind of cousin distance...but supposedly we're related to Adolph Zukor, who founded Paramount Pictures. No free film tickets though. :-( Maybe because he's long passed on.
Wow, those are some relatives! My cousin plays for the Colts. That's all I got.LOL
