Darling Husband and I have both an electric can opener and a manual can opener. I prefer to use the manual, he prefers the electric. I opened a can of green beans tonight for dinner and went to put the can opener back in the drawer when he stopped me and asked if I was going to wash it. I have never washed the can opener. He says when he uses the manual he always washes it. When I asked about the electric he says it doesn’t need to be cleaned because you’re touching it less = less germs.
I never even THOUGHT about washing the can opener until he said something about it, so I figured I’d ask the hive… do you wash / wipe down the can opener?

We only have a manual can opener, and I run it through the dishwasher once a week or so. But, if it gets dirty I will wash it by hand then….geez, I never really thought too much about it!

I just throw it in the dishwasher. I prefer the manual kind as it is easier to clean this way.

i usually wipe down the manual one if it gets stuff on it. im pretty good at keeping it clean but stuff still gets on it. if it gets really dirty in one meal ill scrub it but thats it

We only have a manual can opener.
I voted “I wash it”, but I don’t wash it every time. I wash it every couple weeks probably. I’ll give it a rinse in between if something obviously gets on it.

I wash it every couple of times I use it. My husband actually pointed this out to myself and later my mom. Previously, I washed it every time I used it. I was schooled by my husband that it doesn’t need to be washed every time. I think that the fact that this came in a thread is hilarious because it was one of those “you learn something new about your spouse everyday” kind of moments 7 years later that surprise you.

I can honestly say that I have never washed our manual can opener. I never even thought to. Eek, I wonder what kind of stuff is living on that! lol

We have a manual can opener and I do wash it. I will put it in the dishwasher after a few uses, but after one use if I used it to open tuna. I will usually hand wash it the times I am not putting it in the dishwasher.

I don’t wash our manual one every time I use it, but every few uses I’ll toss it in the dishwasher.
As an aside… I found out recently that my husband didn’t know how to use a manual can opener! I actually had to show him. He’d never even seen one before…. like…. WHAT? lol. I guess his parents always had an electric one and he had an electric one too until he met me except it got lost in the move or something. So weird.

My mom always washed the can opener after each use, so I always have too. I always thought everyone did! I guess I don’t need to all the time 🙂

We wash the manual can opener after every use. Would you stick a spoon in a can of tomato paste then throw it back in the drawer? Me neither. That’s why we have the manual- so it can be washed. Have you ever looked at the disgusting mess on electric can openers? Yuch!

@CorgiTales: umm what?! How did he not know how to use a can opener? I have never met someone who hasn’t!

@CorgiTales: Oh my gosh! Same here! I had to show Darling Husband how to use it and after I did he was like, “you know we have an electric one right…. why do you use this every time it’s so much more work!”
The electric makes me feel like the can is going to fall off and the contents of the can will go everywhere! Too stressful. :/

I do not wash our manual opener because it’s the kind that doesn’t touch the food. It’s the kind that kind of punches in the can so it doesn’t leave a sharp edge.
ETA: If food somehow did get on it though, I would wipe it clean. I do wash it every once in a while just because I like clean things, but not every time I use it.
