I’m a board member for a community arts group. I love it and I love organizing events, especially for kids. For Halloween, I was supposed to chair an art exhibit (and set up a hot cocoa bar with different toppings and cookies) that would feature art by local children and I was excited about it. I mean, I had interest from kids who already working on projects to be displayed. Also, I had the greenlight from the entire board.
Well, I missed last week’s meeting because I had to help my mom with something. Mind you, this is the FIRST meeting I’ve ever missed, though I’m the newest member to the board. I emailed another board member (an older lady who is a royal pain in the ass) on my progress with the art show and funding for everything. I already had a venue – I just needed some money to buy the hot cocoa bar supplies.
I get a reply email informing me that MY exhibit was cancelled because they “didn’t have enough information to properly advertise for it.” Um, they had a location, dates, times, etc. How much more do you need? Apparently, the board decided to cancel it LAST WEEK AND NO ONE TOLD ME. NO ONE TOLD ME MY EXHIBIT WAS CANCELLED AFTER I SPENT SEVERAL HOURS I DIDN’T HAVE WORKING ON ORGANIZING IT. So, I sent her a not so nice email back that ended with ‘now I have to tell a bunch of kids that their art isn’t going to be an art exhibit, so thanks for that.’
By the way, I took full responsibility for not making it to the meeting. There are people who NEVER attend meetings and their events aren’t cancelled, though. I’m so livid right now. I’m considering stepping down because I don’t want to be part of something that does this to people. I’m so over it.
