ok, bear with me here while I vent.
I’m getting kind of tired of these what I would consider as false advertising. Those so called free destination photographer. Oh yah, one caveat, you got to pay for the flight and 4 nights of accomodation and then it is free.
Sorry, but that is not free in my vocabulary. If you are advertising as free, then that means it is free, as in I don’t need to pay for anything. If you need me to pay something, then say so up front in your ad before I waste my time talking to you.
I’m fine with paying for good photographers, and I do understand that I do get what I pay for, but seriously, I’m tired of wasting my time looking at false ads saying they’ll do it for free when it is not free.
In fact it feels like most of these "photographers" are simply looking for a free paid vacation. It costs me less to hire a local than you to fly you there and house you for 4 days as a fair amount of them require.
And what is the deal with housing your for 4 days when you are working for only 1 day. I can understand paying for the day before and the day of the wedding. But why on earth am I paying you to say for 2 more nights at my expense while you sit by the pool drinking margaritas.
Most of them are not even that good to begin with. I wonder if that is why they are posting that they’ll work for "free" since they can’t get hired otherwise.
Anyhow, just stop wasting my time saying it is free when it is not free.
end of rant.

You definitely have a point as to why thye would need 4 days complements of you. Ithink you might be right that they want a vacation. I will say that if they are advertising for free, you have to know even before you pick up the phone there is some catch. Either way, I wouldn’t be interested in them. I doubt they’re that good.

hm.. i don’t so much mind. at one point i was planning a destination wedding, and so i understand your plight. that being said, i don’t see it as false advertising. it would be ridiculous to expect someone to fly to my d.w. on their tab and then shoot the wedding for free. a lot of photographers have you pay their flight and boarding, and THEN charge for the photography on top of that, so i say.. if you can find a good photographer who you love who will shoot your wedding for free, do it.

I think you missed the point of the post. I don’t expect anyone to fly to shoot a wedding for free. What I’m complaining is that they advertise as free when they are not.
If it is not free, then don’t say so in your ad.

If you are looking for a deal, obvioulsy other people do to.
I do mind to pay for they little vacation if the work is GOOD

Why in the world would anyone put in 30-40 hours of work (its not just shooting time, its tremendous editing and planning time) for no money and no opportunity to even relax for a day or two after? That makes no sense at all. You’re getting the images and labor for free in exchange for travel expenses and perhaps an extra night or two for them to enjoy being there not on the clock. THAT is the incentive to do all that work for no money and risk traveling with their gear and it makes perfect sense.
The really talented photographers will charge you their full rate AND travel.

Why in the world would anyone bump this 4 year old thread. LOL. But yeah I don’t know what the heck the OP’s problem was.

Well, with most photographers you have to pay the package AND their travel. So…technically it IS free. 🙂

@seAprilbride: haha that’s pretty weird. someone bumped it and then deleted their comment? this was on the first page of the photo board when I saw it yesterday.

@mariematt: LOL the person who bumped it DID delete their comment. I can see that now.

their work is free. if you wanted a regular photographer who didn’t live in the area, you’d still have to pay for travel and acommodations.

The person who bumped it just came here to advertise. they started a thread to advertise and I told that’s that wasn’t cool so they deleted it.
