Ohhh, I know what you mean. I don't even reply to those divisive Facebook statuses even when they're really, really rude or disrespectful unless I know the person really well. They drive me absolutely crazy, but I figure they're doing it for attention, why give them what they want?
Honestly, thats when you just say that you're an adult and you do not engage in petty arguments online. I have a vey good saying to explain the situation, but it could be offensive so I wont post it. I agree with lilyfaith. Why even get involved?
I am like lilyfaith in that I actually try to stay away from that as much as possible because discussions on certain topics just don't go anywhere. People usually won't agree to disagree either. Sorry you went through that. I too dislike when that happens.
I, personally, love debating because most of the time I do learn something new and might even expand my horizons (though I typically won't do it on Facebook) but nasty, snarky, just trying to aggravate arguing is something else entirely. Ugh. That's so obnoxious! I'm sorry. :-(
ETA: Just had to google Godwin's Law. I didn't know what that was either and I can totally see it being true.
If anyone ever posts something controversial on FB or instigates a heated discussion, I back away ... fast. FB is just not the place to comment on such things, you know? Plus, because it's online and not face-to-face, people are just more apt to be snarky because they're hiding beind a computer screen. I just don't see the point in arguing on FB!
yeah, I realize that it was probably doomed to begin with... but the way she was arguing was just to cut down and dehumanize everyone who was against her, and I guess I just wanted people to see that there were people on my side of the argument who were reasonable, rational and polite. I usually don't participate in FB or internet debates either, but I guess I'm just too optimistic or idealistic or something.

I just got done with a comment thread war on Facebook which just really ticks me the heck off. Both of us were passionate on our topic, both of us were unlikely to come over to the other's side, but gosh darn it, I really really tried hard to keep my cool, to be logical, to be polite to her. What I got in return was her telling me that "you're like all the other [fill in the ideology], you say you care but you really just want to shove your opinion on others!" and responding to my best arguments with "shove it up your ***" and "Godwin's Law" (I had to google it, I didn't even know it existed), and when I accidentally left out an answer to one of her questions in one of my responses because it was midnight and I'd already been verbally assaulted by this woman, she snarks about how I "skillfully dodged" it. ARGH!!!! What makes people think that this is any kind of way to argue? Whatever happened to polite debates?? And why does she assume that because I'm different than her, I'm a horrible person who deserves to be treated this way?
Can I just say again how grateful I am to be a part of WB? I love how even though I have major differences of opinion with so many people here that I still feel welcome and like people will treat me as a person and not "the enemy". /sigh :)
