Oh, don't tell me that. I so covet a KA mixer. But that darn $300 price tag makes me balk every time. I, too, would expect it to keep me from having to hand mix anything. I mean, isn't that the point? I will say, having watched waaaaay too many hours of Food Network, that it does seem common to have to scrape down the sides of lots of things. But, yeah, the not getting to the bottom would bug me too.
Try putting in your liquid first and slowly adding dry ingrediants, just like using a hand mixer you may need to scrape the sides once in a while depending on what you are mixing.
I just got the professional one to replace my 10 year old artisan.
I think they've gone with cheaper parts. It's honestly not as good as my older, better made one. And they rattle now.
To fix your problem they do make a beater that is rubber and scrapes the sides better. I know amazon and BB&B sell it.
I've never heard anyone complain about it. I don't own one, yet, cause of the price tag, but what's the point in spending all that $$$ if it doesn't work the way it's supposed to.
I don't have that problem with mine, I mean some of the dry ingredients will stick to the bottom a little bit, but then you just turn it off, use a spatula and scrape off the bottom and start the mixer up again. Then it mixes it perfect!
My moms mixer which she got at her wedding 28 years ago is amazing and I covet it. She never has to remix or anything and can make pasta noodles with an attachment. I hope that when I get mine it is as good as hers...
It cant scrape the very bottom or it would ruin the mixing attatchments and wear on the gears. You need to definitly read the manual and give it a secon chance. All mixers will make you scrape the sides and bottom a few times. There is no miracle cure. Just think of it this way, it did the hard work, now you get to do a few easy motions to get it the way it needs to be. Plus you can use this for so much more than just mixing!
@UpstateCait: With any stand mixer, you periodically have to stop and scrape the sides and bottom.
I do not have your style but an artisan series and I do not have that problem at all. FWIW the handle is not suppose to touch the bowl.
@ignatiangal: What she said!
I love my KitchenAid, but it's not a miracle device. Also, if you use the guard when putting in ingredients, it ususalaly helps.
@dotdotdoodlebot Actually no. My old artisan never needed scraped.
The kitchenaid is still amazing. I bake a ton and I just throw everything in there and it always comes out perfectly. It's just their parts aren't that good now. My mom still uses her 30 year old one whereas my friend's 4 year old one just bit the dust.
agree with @ignatiangal: it depends on what I make, but it works fine for the most part. Most recipes tell me to periodically scrape the sides down (and so I do).
This is the blade someone else had mentioned http://www.amazon.com/Design-Beater-5-Quart-KitchenAid-Tilt-Head/dp/B0015TMHFG/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1316183483&sr=8-5 it comes with different blade colors too (pink, blue, etc)
My mom has one that is 20 years old and it works just the same as my 5 year old one. As PP said, any stand mixer will leave some dry ingredients unmixed at the bottom as you cannot have metal on metal. This is where the spatula sided attachment can come in handy.
Like I said, mine is 5 years old and I use it 2 to 3 times a week and LOVE it. I just registered (and GOT) the big boy, a 6qt one, and plan to keep mine because why not have 2?!?! :)
Read the manual - and try using other attachments as suggested. You'll love it! Dont give up hope! :)
if you look in the manuel there is a section about this. you need to lower the pin a little bit so the whisk hits all the sides/bottom of the bowl. good luck!
I felt the same way about my kitchenaid until I started getting some of the attachments - I use the meat grinder attachment all the time now, and love it!
@Wonderwoman217: I'm fine with mixing the sides, it's the bottom that irks me. It's not like I'm going to stop using it or anything, I just wish it reached more so that the price tag was a little more justified.
@PinkMagnolia: FMIL & FSIL each have the artisan and theirs is way quieter than mine is. Mine shakes the whole counter.
@HisIrishPrincess: That's my thing. I still think it's great and it saves a ton of time when you were hand mixing everything before, I guess I'm just a little dissapointed.
@ignatiangal: I'll have to try that. Thanks!
@MsBrewer: Is yours the pro or the artisan? I've asked artisan owners about it but they don't seem to have the same problem.
@accorn: I hope my mixer lasts 28 years!
I totally get what you are saying - i never really thought about it i guess, i just scrape the sides usually.
i still need to get some attachments - i personally love my kitchen aid (pro), but i've never owned a mixer before so i dont have much to compare it to.
I'm definitely not going to throw in the towel. I love the mixer and it has made my life a heck of a lot easier. Guess I'll have to re-read the manual. I only skimmed it when we first got it.
Thanks everyone!
omg you have to freeze the ice cream maker attachment? I'm going to have to look into that because it wouldn't fit in my freezer.
@PinkMagnolia: http://www.amazon.com/KitchenAid-KICA0WH-Cream-Maker-Attachment/dp/B0002IES80/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1316184456&sr=1-1 I guess if I had it though... I'd eat way more ice cream! So maybe it's good that I don't have the ice cream bowl...
@PinkMagnolia - I grind meats to make my own ground beef, turkey etc, which I love since I now know exactly what goes into my ground meat! It's great for grinding hard cheeses and stuff too I guess, though I haven't tried that. I got it on Amazon.
The ice cream maker attachment is intriguing! Though I usually just freeze bananas and then toss them in the blender to make 'ice cream' because it actually whips up to the same texture as ice cream, but is much healthier!
Yep, you have to freeze it for 18 hrs prior to making? I'm not sure the exact time I just keep it in our freezer all summer. I absolutely love mine and the ice cream we make is so much better than store bought. I do want the meat grinder and veggie slicer too!
a lot of it is the attachements you can get to go with it like a meat grinder and pasta roller too. I covet the meat grinder, but in reality I rarely use my mixer. My cuisinart on the other hand is a fabulous thing as well as my vitamixer.
I also have a kitchenaid. I bought that blade that dorsay mentioned. I also have the ice cream attachment. We havent used it yet but the bowl stays in the freezer for when we want to use it! I soooo love my mixer!
I live and die by my red KA mixer. All mixers need a bit of scraping. If the paddle/whisk/hook/etc touch the bowl it will damage both the bowl and the machine (and the only way for it to mix without leaving anything on the bottom or sides would be for it to touch the bottom or sides of the bowl - which would be bad). Anyways, its a great mixer. My mom has had hers for like 10 years or more and its only now starting to get a little funky (although it still does a great job. When I make challah dough, it overheats but still makes perfect dough).
The beater blade that the KitchenAid comes with is not the greatest, but the curved beater blades mentioned does wonders. I find that KitchenAid's blade works best for cookie dough with a little scraping. I've made shortbread super fast with it where I can just walk away while it does its thing. Have you played with the whisk yet? It's amazing how easy it is to make meringue with one of those.
My mother has a KA mixer (that I love) and we have to scrape off the sides and lift up the bottom. It's really no biggy, i haven't used any other type of mixer so I don't know if it's a normal thing. I watch cooking shows and they do the same thing.
Also, depending upon what you get from your registry, consider getting an extra bowl. Two years later, I still haven't gotten another one. It helps with big batch baking to a clean bowl ready to go for another round.
just wanted to say lol to the title of this post :D can't comment much beyond that since I dont have one...although I would like to one day (or so i think?)!

FMIL got us the Kitchenaid Pro mixer for my bridal shower. I was so excited to get it since I love baking but to be honest, I’m a little disappointed in it. For as expensive as this mixer is, I was expecting for it to do more. I don’t know if maybe I got a defective one or something but it doesn’t mix the whole bowl and I find that kind of annoying. When it’s finished mixing, I have to remove it from the stand and finish mixing whatever it didn’t get by hand, which are the sides (not a big deal) and pretty much the whole bottom. The mixer thingy isn’t touching the bottom of the bowl at all. Now, don’t get me wrong, mixing it by hand for a few seconds certainly won’t kill me but I guess I expected a $400+ mixer to do the whole job for me.
Does anyone else have this problem with their Kitchenaid?
