How long is too long for a ceremony reading? I want to have a friend read Love Monkey by Edward Monkton for our wedding ceremony. After reading it outloud and timing it, it came out to be about 4 minutes long. Im concerned it is a bit too long? It will be the only reading and the cermony itself shouldnt be that long seeing as we are doing a civil ceremony. Opinions?

I think it might be too long. People may just stop listening or zone out, unfortunately.

Yeah, I can’t imagine myself paying attention to someone reading for 4 minutes, unless they either had an interesting voice or were reading something I personally found interesting. I would just zone out…
Though a quick Google search reveals it’s a children’s book. Perhaps it would be possible to have a slideshow of the pages along with the reading, to help keep everyone’s attention?

Actually, further Google research makes me think I might try stealing that for my wedding. Thanks! And it seems fairly interesting and light-hearted, so even as a reading, without visuals, it may be possible to keep people’s attention. Possibly experiment with some unlucky bridesmaids or family members!

I wouldn’t say 4 minutes is too long, but I’ve read Love monkey and I found the story made me want to yawn a bit. For me it’s too slushy but I’m sure most guests wouldn’t mind. I would also find it too childlike for an adult wedding.
I voted no for 4 minutes is not too long. I’ve sat through longer!

4 minutes is definately not too long; I hate short readings anyway and I’ve sat through much longer at other weddings!
