We got married at The Barn at Gibbet Hill in Groton, MA. You could take a look there. If you get married in the offseason, the venue rental will be less than $1,000. But you do have to use their catering which is delicious, but expensive.
I would highly recommend looking into Smith Barn at Brooksby Farm in Peabody, MA. It's really beautiful, rustic, simple and set in amongst an apple orchard! I just photographed a wedding there which had about 60 guests. I imagine that it would hold 70-80 just fine. If you want to check out images from the wedding to see more of the venue here is a link: http://blog.amwphotos.com/index.php/2010/08/06/katie-and-gabe-brooksby-farm-wedding-peabody-ma/
Also another local photographer did a post on farm venues in MA, you can check those out here: http://www.mergeweddings.com/posts/massachusetts-farm-wedding-locations/
Best of luck!!
We looked at doing ours at Sweet Berry Farm in Middletown, RI (very close to 3rd beach, really pretty). We loved the coordinator there and the space too but it didn't end up being right for us. Do check them out though: http://www.sweetberryfarmri.com/siterental.html. The venue fee is not under $1000 but it is certainly less than a lot of the other venues. To be honest it might be a bit tricky to find a barn-type venue in RI for less than $2500/$3000 just to rent the space (not factoring in tent rentals). MA might have more options.

Hi New Englanders!
I'm a new "bee", and am long on the hunt for a nontraditional wedding/reception venue in New England, preferably Rhode Island or Massachusetts. We're looking for a rustic farm, barn, stable, or garden setting that is inexpensive. They don't have to be wedding experts....a real live farm or barn would do just fine because what we're planning is going to be very casual and rustic. We've searched all the usuals in our area (Mount Hope Farm, Blithewald,The Meeting House, etc) and the venue costs alone are prohibitive to our small budget. I'm getting a little sad and frustrated at this point...is there ANYTHING out there for under $1000 for a venue fee?
Right now, we have about 75 guests but could cut that back a bit.
Thanks in advance!
