Our STDs (postcards) went out in the mail last Monday.  As of today (Monday -- 1 week since the cards were sent out), less than half of the people who we have talked to have received their cards in the mail.

I'm really confused as to why it is taking more than a week for the postcards to arrive in the mail.  (Everyone who did receive the cards got them in the mail last Thursday.)  All of the addresses have been checked and double-checked.  We had the right amount of postage on the postcards.  We did hand-cancel them, but that shouldn't be a problem, right?

Has anyone waited a long time for their STDs or invites to be delivered??  Any ideas for what has gone wrong here?

Could it be because of all of the holiday mail??  Just a thought to consider.

Agree, this is probably because of all the holiday mail.  Usually my mail takes 2-3 days to get places, but I am planning on getting on top of my holiday cards tonight to ensure they get where they're going before Christmas!

It could be the holiday mail, or some other reason...did you put a return address on them?

I definitely bet this could be due to the increased holiday mail!  I've heard people say that mail takes a good week longer than it usually does this time of year.

Ok... i really hope it's just the holiday mail.  I have never noticed a big slowdown with the mail at this time of year though :-(  Maybe some post offices are more overwhelmed than others?? ...since some people got theirs in the mail right away.

@realeastcoaster -- we did put return address stickers on them -- just to the left of the stamp.  We made the stickers with our label maker.  None of the cards have been returned to us though.

I would give it another week too.  I sent 3 STDs to one address--one to my aunt & uncle, and one to each of my adult cousins.  They arrived on THREE SEPARATE days!  My aunt got hers last and was starting to get offended (well, I think she was kidding when she told me), thinking she wasn't getting one.

Thanks for the positive feedback.  I just talked to several more people -- 2 have received their STDs, 1 hasn't.  It does seem to go by post office though.  All guests who gets their mail from a single post office have either all received the cards... or all not received the cards.  I will wait another week, and if people still haven't received the cards we will send out an email to *all* of our guests with the STD image and text attached.  Ugh.

We had a few people who moved, and it takes a very long time for the post office to return undeliverable mail.  But I do think the issue is the incredible increase in mail during this time of year and your STD will soon reach the guests.

I just ordered something to be mailed and there was a notice on the website saying that USPS was experiencing delays because of larger-than-anticipated volumes of holiday mail. It's probably that.

I would attribute the amount of time to the time of year. In addition, (I'm basing this mainly off of my local PO as my dad works there) for the past several years, as people retire or quit, the PO does not always replace them.  This means they are more shorthanded then ever, which might be why it feels like it is taking longer than usual.  When mail is sent from one PO to another, it first arrives at the other PO plant.  Especially if there is more than one PO in the area. Sometimes, if the plant is really shorthanded, mail can sit for a couple days just waiting to be sorted, before it even arrives at the correct PO to actually be delivered.

That being said, mail really can get lost from time to time, so if it doesn't show up in the next couple of days you might consider sending out those digital ones.

Definitely due to the holidays and when the post office actually sends the mail. Sometimes they send in batches (no idea why) so it doesn't actually all leave the same time.

Sorry ladies!  I just realized that the title of this post is a tad bit melodramatic... since there are people posting on this site who actually have much more serious reasons to be "really upset".  Save the dates not arriving in the mail on time isn't exactly the end of the world I realize.  Still, I was pretty upset over it, so thank you all for your positive feedback :-)

my fi and i have noticed that the mail has been taking FOREVER recently. like, we ordered a bunch of invitation samples the week before thanksgiving and they're still trickling in. and my ffil mailed us something before thanksgiving, apparently, and it still hadn't come over a week later even though we live in the same city (in fact, i'm not sure it ever came? hmm better check that!). so yeah, i'd chalk it up to holiday mail traffic--it may be worse this year than other years, i think i've heard that there have been post office closings because of the economy...

it could also be the weather... that rapid snow storm last week that blew through the entire continental U.S. slowed down usps, ups, fedex, etc.

i work as a consultant mailing out proposals daily. we've had 1 other incident using UPS overnight, and last thursday.. it didn't make it in time due to the snow storm hitting diff parts of the states at diff times.

i'm sure you'll be okay and they will get your STD's sooN!

Give it one more week and see what happens!!

@LittleA--that's good that he ended up handing it to her!  I think it's stupid when people yell at the postmen.  They have no more control over what you receive daily than you do.  They just deliver day to day what is given to them.  Stuff gets held up at the plants, or waiting to be sent to another branch.  [But I'm biased since my dad is a Postman. :)  ]

Don't worry about it.  The mail is the slowest between December 15 and Christmas.  I ordered something from Walmart and it took over a week to get to me and the same thing took only 3 days to get to my friend.

don't worry too much--i agree with the others, it may be holiday mail.  plus, oddly enough, i had send a save the date to myself and got it about 2 weeks after my guests received it. weird.  hope they get delivered soon!

I just noticed that this thread is still getting comments, so I thought I would update.  From the guests we have talked to probably ~80% have received their STDs, but there's still a pretty solid list of people who don't have them (plus there are probably more amongst the people who we haven't talked to recently).  We're going to send out an email to all of our guests on Monday (by then it will have been 2 weeks since the initlal mailing).  The email will include the images of the front and back of our STD postcard.  We are also going to ask that anyone who didn't receive it in the mail please email us their address, in case we have it wrong in our spreadsheet -- unlikely though.

I'm still sure it is the mail though.  It's good to make sure the addresses are right though for the invitaitons later.
