DH and I had a house built on some land that we purchased a couple years ago. We live in a very secluded area and have absolutely NO neighbors for at least half a mile in any direction. About 200-300 yards from our house is a massive 2 story concrete building completely hidden in the trees. There is a “hidden drive” from the road leading up the hill to this building but a huge log has purposely been placed in the path making it impossible to easily drive up to the building. In the 5+ years that DH and I have lived here we have only seen people at the building twice. Both times a truck was parked at the bottom of the hill and someone was standing as a “lookout” with 2 HUGE Mastiffs.
The weird thing is; sometimes DH and I can stand on our porch (mostly at night) and hear dogs howling and barking from inside the building. They cry constantly. Anytime I take our dogs outside I can whistle and the sounds start coming from that building. I think someone is either using it to make drugs or something. Why else would they go to great lengths to hide the building, make it hard to get to , and have dogs there?
Im not sure if I should call the police or not; Im mostly worried about dogs being locked up in that building due to the weather becoming increasingly cold and noone is there often enough to properly feed, water them. Im also worried about retaliation if illegal activites are being done there. How else would the police know?
Just not sure what to do; like I said- totally weird situation lol

Call the police! Have them look into it. Definitely some suspicious behavior going on there.

@sarakat02: + 1!! Better safe than sorry.

yes get someone to look into it.
could be a dog fighting location.
ETA: Or someone is keeping their fighting dogs there secretly even if they aren’t actually fighting them there.

I’d call the police for a few reasons. a) I am an animal lover, and the thought of dogs being used merely to guard drugs and not being cared for properly would set me right off alone. Seriously though, I accually went into my assumed to be abandoned neighbors house once when I saw cats coming and going through the garage….they had left all their pets inside and the ones there weren’t smart enough to get out were literally eating eachother, so gross! reason b) having illegal activities going on anywhere near your home is just not good, especially out in the middle of no where. People on drugs do crazy things, and if your house is the first one they see, you may become a victim if you don’t report it. reason c) simular to reason b, meth labs are extremely common in buildings such as you described, and when they go wrong they literally explode, which could catch fire and reach your home, not good! and if your worried about the retalliation, like I said before you might get some crazy stuff anyway, and police monitor rural areas in helicopters regularly, so I would just make it very clear in your report that they be discrete!

what part of the country are you in? That sounds like meth-making (or some kind of “cooking”) to me. My family’s farm is isolated like that and we rent some property about a mile away with older buildings and store hay/straw there (read: highly flammable)……several times throughout the warmer months we’ll have to call the cops or drive a truck over and chase out some………sketchy characters.
I would call the cops!

Meth is really common here. I know they arent using them for dog fights or anything. I think someone is staying up there and camping out a week out of each month and cooking up there or something. That place has no electricity or anything and there are no vehicles parked up there. I have quite a few friends on the police dept. so it wouldnt be hard to let them know.

I’d call the cops. And cite possible animal abuse or something so they would check it out. It’s rather sketchy and I wouldn’t want those dogs suffering. Only bad thing is they will know it is you because there is no one else out there. So thats the trade off.

I’d definitely call the police mostly because that would creep me the eff out and I’d be worried about the doggies!

hmm. I would normally tell someone it’s better to mind your business unless you have clear indications that something was really wrong. But in this case it seems like contacting the police is the right thing. The thing that comes to mind when you describe this place and location is that it would be prime for human trafficking. And I hate human trafficking. If anything to get it off your conscience.

I think if anything; they are cooking drugs up there. we RARELY see anyone there. twice in 5+ years. Every now and then youll hear dogs but this isnt very often. Im gonna talk to a family member (officer) about what to do.

I’d get the police to investigate it. I’m super worried about the dogs.

Talk to family member who is a police officer first for tips on how to report it without the neighbors realizing it was you and retaliating.
