My husband and I are going to California for our delayed honeymoon in a few weeks. The more I think about packing, the more anxious I am getting. What if I bring the wrong clothes? How do I know what the rules are for what to wear? What if I look stupid and everyone stares at me? I am terrible at dressing, and look stupid pretty much whenever I try, but if I plan carefully, in advance, I am okay. So…what would you pack??
This is what I was thinking of bringing:
one dress. It looks okay on me (I think) and is like seersucker. It has a higher neckline?
one pair of heels to wear with said dress.
a few scarves
three pairs of Gap “boyfriend” khakis: dark blue, olive green, and bright blue
two pairs of jeans: one dark and one “distressed”
an orange colored t shirt to wear with the dark blue pants
two striped t-shirts (one is light blue with white stripes and the other is white with navy stripes)
pair of navy Toms
pair of flip flops
pair of nicer sandals (I have ones that are gold with a flower or ones that are like gladiator style and black)
All of the khakis and jeans are ankle length, like summer/spring length I guess. Not capri length.
Is this a stupid plan? Will I look really out of place? I don’t have a lot of money so I can’t just buy a whole new wardrobe…so I am unsure what I will do if it’s all wrong.

What kind of stuff are you going to be doing? Also, have you looked into the weather in Cali? Personally, I’d be bringing shorts, as I imagine it will be warm…

It’s going to vary so much…like some places it’ll be in the 60s, and others in the 90s.

I think the outfits you can put together with those will look good, but I agree with PP – Cali can be really hot in June, depending on where in the state you are going. It might not be a bad idea to throw in some shorts (or capris if you don’t like shorts). On the flip side, if you are going to be on the beach, it might be a good idea to have a hoodie or at least a long-sleeved shirt for cool nights.

Well if you’re going to be walking around alot, etc, then I’d say there’s nothing wrong with what you’re bringing….it’s all pretty casual and standard stuff, and you’ll want to be comfortable.
Again, I personally would be bringing at least one pair of shorts, and a swimsuit (not sure if you just didn’t mention that), because I think you might be too hot in jeans in some places. I’d also throw in a few more sun dresses, in case you want to go for a fancy dinner, or are even going somewhere a little more “upscale” to visit or something, but sun dresses are my summer go-to, so that’s just me. Also I’d bring a hat to shield from the sun 🙂
I hope you have a great trip!

LadyBear: I will definitely have a few hoodies with me! I meant for “fancy” clothes.
Ugh I look awful in shorts. I’m short and have big legs, so the only length of short that looks halfway decent is very short…and then I feel horrible because I know everyone is staring at me.

Are you going to a lot of fancy, fashionable places?
What your packing sounds fine. I doubt you’ll look out of place or that anyone will pay that much attention to your clothes.
If you give us a better idea of where you’ll be going or what you’ll be doing, we’ll be able to give you better help, but from what I’ve read, your clothes sound fine.
One of the other commenters mentioned sun dresses. I agree, with her; they are great for lots of settings. Maxi dresses are great too.

Rhopalocera: We’re probably just going to breweries, wineries, and taco places. We’re not fancy people. I just don’t want people to look at me funny because I’m wearing the wrong clothes. I don’t know the rules.
I’m going to try to find a pair of shorts or two that don’t look awful. Maybe at Gap? Target? I don’t know.

peachacid: I think you’ll be fine then! I’m not sure what you’re definition of “fancy” is, but if you’ll be going out at night, I find that black pants are usually a good mix & match item that dress up an outfit more than jeans (though the colored khakis will probably have a similar effect).
Just my experience – but I’m also usually bad at this type of stuff, so take it with a grain of salt!

LadyBear: I hope it will be okay. I am always the girl in the sweatshirt when everyone else somehow knew to wear heels and stuff. I don’t know.

peachacid: Oh, well then you’re probably just fine.
I doubt places like that will have a dress code or that anyone will pay attention to your clothing.
I’ve noticed that you’re a bit iffy when it comes to clothing and getting dressed up. You’re clothes are just fine, though. You’re not going to look awful, stupid, or out of place.

usually when I am packing I try and make a list of the things I am doing like:
sun – travel yoga pants w loose purple top and black wrap/ toms
mon – AM boat tour and pier in SF – shorts w black t & jean jacket/ flip flops
PM – dinner at chez panise – dress w black wrap/ heels, purple earrings & silver bracelets
once you have an idea of your activities I feel like it sort of falls together better.
I think that you need some shorts, skirts or dresses because wearing pants and jeans is going to be very warm at times
also (IMHO) depending on what you are doing you might want something more “fancy” than a sundress? I am not sure what your plans are but if you are going to be in a city and going out you might want something a little more night time

Rhopalocera: Thank you. I feel like I never get it right so people stare at me…I just want to feel happy on my honeymoon (even if it is a year after we got married, ha).

We joke in California that you can tell a tourist because they’re wearing a California sweatshirt. Everyone thinks it’s always hot and sunny, but it gets pretty cool at night (often in the 50’s or low 60’s even in the summer) and some days it’s overcast by the beach, so definitely bring a cozy jacket/sweatshirt and a pair of jeans. Beyond that, you don’t need anything special 🙂

peachacid: Crossing over from your other thread on how to pack into a carryon suitcase . . .
can you sub one of your nice sandals for the heels you were going to wear with the dress?
Maybe bring a lightweight cardigan instead of the jean jacket (would be slightly dressier, probably less bulky and easier to pack)
Agree with other PP’s that depending on where you are going in Cali, you may want to sub another dress or lightweight skirt for one of the khaki pants or jeans as it may be pretty warm.
I think you are going to look fine with what you are planning to bring.
