- Wedding: August 2014
Yes, you read that correctly. I fell down an ENTIRE flight of stairs on my way to the chapel. And it was still the best day of my life! Our wedding was a series of little disasters right up until the moment I walked through the doors and then it was absolute perfection. I just wanted to share a quick recap and a laugh at our beautiful disaster of a wedding and give you all hope that even if you literally fall down a flight of stairs- it can still turn out perfectly.
Bruised but not beaten.
So we had a bit of a Bridesmaids’ Curse. My sister joked at one point that we were like a bridal party version of Final Destination. One by one, we were each having some terrible luck.
Bridesmaid 1 started the week with her bridemaid dress being stolen from her front porch (UPS package).
Bridesmaid 2- my sweet pregnant bridesmaid- in a sad and scary turn of events, had some pregnancy complications and was put on bed rest by her doctor 2 days before the wedding. Obviously travel was out and she was missed dearly but I’m so glad she and the baby are ok (still on bed rest and taking it easy).
Bridesmaid 1 (again) came down with a sudden mystery illness halfway through the rehearsal dinner- she nearly fainted and had to be helped outside, where she was attended to by the 3 doctors in our bridal party and family. She felt really awful for a couple of hours (dizzy, cold sweats, almost blacking out) and we never figured out what was wrong. She fully recovered by the time she went back to the hotel and was perfect the next day. So bizarre.
Bridesmaid 3 broke her toe while we were getting ready before the wedding. Anyone who has broken a toe knows the pain- and she was in a lot of it. She spent 2 hours propped up with ice (and mimosas) being attended to by my sister/MOH the doctor- who joked at this point that being my MOH was just like being on call at the hospital. Some tape and a shoe switch later (no heels for her!), she managed to limp down the aisle and still have a great time at the reception.
And finally, as I have already mentioned, I fell down a flight of stairs. It began to rain- like torrential downpour rain- right as we were leaving the loft where we spent the morning getting ready and heading to the bridal quarters at the chapel/gardens. We were fully made up with grocery bags tied over our heads to keep our hair from getting ruined, wearing robes and trying to load up the shuttle with our dresses and bags while staying dry. I started to descend the slippery back steps holding an umbrella in one hand and my veil in the other, and had just a moment to think “wow these steps are slippery, wouldn’t it be terrible if-” when suddenly Whoosh! CRASH! THUD! Thud thud thud thud thud allllll the way to the bottom, like the worst water slide in the history of mankind. All 14 or so steps.
My mom and sister were the only ones who saw it happen, and I heard them both scream like I’d just fallen off of a cliff. I honestly didn’t know whether to laugh or cry or scream. But nothing felt broken and we were late, so I just had to say “Welp, that happened. Let’s go.”
Thankfully, I wasn’t wearing my dress. Thankfully, I didn’t break anything! And thankfully, I wore shapewear all night, because it definitely helped keep the swelling down, haha. And thankfully the Wedding Gods had finally had enough and decided to let the rest of the day and night go perfectly.
Oh wait… did I say perfectly? Well, almost. Due to a serious miscommunication with my ceremony musicians, I am now the bride that walked down the aisle to the Game Of Thrones theme song. Yep. That also happened. And I have video to prove it (along with what I imagine are some great pics of my WTF?! face as I walked in).
It truly was an amazing day, disasters and all. I had so much fun getting ready with my friends, mom and sister. Meeting my soon to be husband during our first look was incredibly special. Our venues could not have been more beautiful. The food was delicious and our wedding band totally rocked the party. Our friends and family had an amazing time, and we loved seeing them have an amazing time. We had one of the best nights of our lives, and now we’re married!!! So until I have pro pics to share, here are some guest shots of our day. 🙂
