I think that whatever makes you more comfortable is best. I don't think that there's any realy etiquitte to what you can and can't wear, it's persoanl choice.
I myself would want to wear a wedding type dress because how often will I get to wear one? As long as you're okay with your choice, it's the right one.
Having a second dress for the reception is becoming more and more popular. It is totally okay to have a second dress and the choice is yours on the style, length, color, everything! Whatever you want is what is most important. I do agree with Sweeney2Be that this is the one day you can have a wedding type dress, so just think it through as you make your choice. You could always go with a short veil with or without a tiara to make your dress more "weddingish". As long as you are happy - that's what counts. Take care.
I don't think it needs to be white - but I would probably buy a white one...
other cultures often have reception dress changes. i had a dress change right before the cake cutting and wore a traditional chinese cheongsam, which was pink (but you can get them in almost any color). many chinese girls change up to 4 times! some of the bees have done that.
you could always get a dress you think you can wear again, and if you're comfortable enough in your wedding dress, you could just not change. like i made my bms and myself flipflops, but in the end my shoes were so comfy i forgot to wear the flipflops.
thanks everyone~ I think i'm gonna get a second dress but i will probably get in white....
Claire Pettibone makes beautiful and comfortable wedding dresses out of cotton and lace that are really perfect for beachy type weddings. I fell in love with a couple of her dresses but they weren't 'formal' enough for the entire event but were perfect reception dresses.

Hello Everyone,
I have already purchased a beautiful wedding dress...due to the design of the dress i think i may need a second reception dress where i can dance and be more comfortable in...do i need to wear a white/ivory/dress throughout the night? or can i do a casual dress that is blue or pink...in some other pastel colors. Keep in mind wedding will be help by the sea in Santa Barbara.
