I'm trying to make a decision on whether to have our wedding reception in a hall or in our back yard.  There are pro's and con's to both.  My main concern is saving money!  Every hall that I've gotten information on will be very expensive.  I looked at pricing on tents and it seems to be less expensive.  I know that tables, chairs, plates, glasses, dance floor will all have to be rented but I was wondering if anyone has had any experience or knows someone who had a wedding reception at their home.  Any advice will be much appreciated!  Thank you :)

Well, depending on where you are located an outdoor wedding could be beautiful! I'm in the midwest and honestly I would never take the chance! My parents went to an outdoor wedding this Oct. There was a tent but it rained and everyone was wet & cold. So if the time of year and the location is right, do it! Otherwise, I'm sure you can find a cheaper hall (like the VFW or something?) that wouldn't break the bank.

We are having a backyard wedding.  I think either way you go can cost a lot or not.

Pros to having a backyard wedding:

    - you can choose your caterer

    - you can choose exactly what you want to rent, shop around for cheaper rental places

    - you are not restricted to the rules of the hall

    Cons:

    - it can end up costing more with all the things you don't have that you need to get (A bar, gift table, chairs, glassware) plus the people you need (servers, bartenders, people to clean or set up etc)

    - There is way, way more planning and coordination involved since you need to figure out all these things

And other things obviously.  I really really did not want to have my wedding at a reception hall, and I like the flexibility we have.  So far it is going to cost less to the same amount since we are paying less for food and hall but more for service and rentals.  Don't forget too that there can sometimes be other costs you might not think of at first (e.g. tent permits, rental toilets) and things that you will need lots of help with (e.g. setting up, taking down, cleaning).  Good luck!
