    Hi Hive,

I have a question that is kind of dumb but I don't know where else to ask it so here it goes.

I wanted to have a formal, five course sit down dinner and I was wondering under the context of a wedding, does the cocktail hour with passed hors d'ouevres count as one course.

    Here's my menu right now

Cocktail Hour - A choice of 8 different passed hors d'ouevres

    DINNER

    Soup

    Salad

    Choice of two different entrees

    Wedding Cake

Should I serve an appetizer after the soup? Or am I ok? Is this too much food?

We're also going to have a dessert bar towards the end of the reception where our guests can pack up cupcakes, cookies, mini-cupcakes, macaroons and a few other goodies to take away with them as a favor.

I just went to a wedding this weekend and the setup was very similar to that.  Make sure you check out the portions of each course if they're smaller, but I think that it's plenty of food and an appetizer isn't necessary.  Guests will be eager to get up and dance!

I don't know if hors d'ouvres "count" as a course. The really formal way to serve a five course meal is to serve your starch prior to, and separate from, the entree. But if the goal is to heighten the formality, I would actually think that a palate cleanser would have more of an impact. A third idea is to serve cheese and fruit after the entree but before the dessert.
