Every wedding I have been to (I plan on doing thiswith mine as well) alternates tables. Like the first table could be the brides family, the second table the grooms, the thirs the brides again, the fourth the grooms and it would go like that the whole way through.
Personally, I love this idea because it gets the famlies to mingle and a little more and it's one bg party, not 2 separate ones.
You can arrange the seating any way you want. I have never attended any wedding (or other event for that matter) that had any seating arrangement, which I would never advise but that is a different story. That said, everyone mixed up so there was no separation like you are describing. Then again, I have never attended a ceremony that split up the guests by who knows the bride vs the groom either.

Hey ladies,
Im currently working on the seating chart and placecards and was wondering...is the reception seating done like ceremony seating (brides side on left and grooms side on right?) We are having a buffet style reception and FI and I are sitting at a sweetheart table. Thanks!!!!
