Somebody on here just did something similar, and mentioned she was not happy with her decision. Entertaining people, especially in the same house for an extended time period is a lot of work, and not always as fun as you'd expect it to be. Somebody always wants something from you!
Most owners are pretty specific in not renting to large parties (weddings, graduations, reunions, etc) and will state so on their listings. If you get lucky enough to find one that specifies that the size is good for those things, the houses are usually huge and quite costly. You won't save much then, as you'll also need at least some rentals...so how will you hide it from the neighbors that know the house is having a party? What about parking for a lot of people and noise ordinances? What if you all got kicked out and had no place to host your wedding?
I looked into it for a beach wedding, and got turned away at every try.
I think it sounds lovely and intimate. It is true that many vacation homeowners specifically forbid throwing events, though.
Best of luck in finding the perfect venue!
hi smyley, thanks for your input! certainly things i've thought about. & like i said, i'd like to be transparent with the landlord & not hide anything we're planning on doing. also, i'd love to have my wedding party hang out with us for a few days as they are my closest family & friends. i would not feel like i'd have to entertain as we're a pretty easy-going group. compared to other venues, these vacation rentals are actually cheaper, which is why we're looking into them. but i know there could be additional costs for holding an event, such as larger damage deposits. i will definitely have to explore this more. thanks again!
@LALaw:i do like the intimacy of this type of venue, but can see the challenges as well. thanks for your input LALaw!

we are thinking of having our reception/dinner in a chalet/cabin in the rocky mountains (specifically canmore, alberta... if anyone has any specific venue suggestions, that would be great!!). these places are normally rented out to skiiers/families on vacation. i want to be transparent with the landlords & not get in trouble for throwing a party in their vacation rental home. but i'm just not sure exactly how to approach this. most of these homes will accommodate to sleep 6 up to 12 people & we plan to have our wedding party stay there for a few nights. these places are large enough to have 45-60 people for our wedding reception & dinner for one of those nights. & we can easily find sleeping accommodation very close to the area for the rest of our guests. we are looking into this as an option because we think we can save money on the rental, not have to hire people to decorate & do it ourselves (taking our time without any deadlines), we can bring in our own alcohol & not have to worry about a liquor license. at least, at this point, these are what we believe are the benefits. has anyone out there done this? any tip/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! thank you!!
