What is everyone’s recessional song for leaving the church?! We’re not having a catholic mass, just a short ceremony at a church and I really wanted my song to be Can’t help falling in love by UB40. I had mentioned that to one of my bridesmaids and she pretty much told me that I was crazy for picking a song like that!!! What do you think? Should I do something more “church like” or pick something totally different like what i had originally chosen?! HELP!

Check what’s allowed in your church first of all. Mine could only be instrumental and/or liturgical music. Anything that just sounds joyful will do.

In the Catholic church, the non-mass version of weddings still contain everything the mass does… just without the Eucharistic Liturgy. Even though you will not be consecrating the Eucharist… the tabernacle is still present in the sanctuary with the Eucharist inside and you are in a blessed “house of God.”
Because of this, it would be an extremely rare situation (and one where the priest is breaking the “rules”) to allow a secular song. All music needs to contribute to the sanctity of what is taking place and be of Sacred Nature. In short,
“to be suitable for use in the Liturgy, a sung text must not only be doctrinally correct, but must in itself be an expression of the Catholic faith.”
For our recessional, we had “Joyful, Joyful, we adore Thee” played very upbeat and charismatically (think sister act).
Best of luck to you! (oh, and there’s a lot of music posts over on the Catholic board.)
