Holy cow! I would not have expected it to come out to that much! I'm a grocery store make up person myself, so I don't really have any preferences. Generally I just go with cover girl and maybelline. For me, I would say foundation, primer, and concealer are the only things I would splurge on. For the rest, I just want to know what colors to use, but I can't imagine that any one brand of eyeshadow or blush is that much better than any other. Frankly the eyeshadow base sounds unnecessary to me, and I bet covergirl eyeliner/mascara would work fine. Lip color might be harder, because you'll be doing a bit of kissing I bet, so it might wear off if you aren't careful ;)
Actually eyeshadow base will give your more inexpensive shadows some staying power. I use Urban Decay's Primer Potion and LOVE it!
As far as eyeshadow - if you want drugstore try Revlon they're probably some of the "better" drugstore brands.
Oh! And just to let you know Sephora is offering a 15% discount to their "beauty insiders" it's free to sign up - so maybe you can call and ask if they'll give you that discount for the items you just purchased.
For primer, Monistat Chaffing Gel (same formulation as Smashbox's Original Photo Finish Foundation Primer). For eyeshadows, CG eyeshadows aren't as highly pigmented or as blendable as their higher-end counterparts, but L'Oreal has their H.I.P line of color cosmetics and I do really like their loose eyeshadow pigments. And I'm a huge supporter of eyebrow gel, it's one of the main steps in my makeup routine, even if I'm not looking to get all dolled-up. For my brows, I use Maybelline's Great Lash Mascara in Clear, it not only helps keep my brows in check, but it tames flyaways. Hope that helps!
@sandiegoali- I guess... I've never had a problem with my eyeshadow fading away. But maybe people who wear more complicated styles would find it helpful...
Eyeshadow base was one of the best makeup items I ever purchased. Seriously. My eyeshadow went from lasting about an hour before going in the creases of my eyes to lasting 12 hours +. That stuff ROCKS!
As far as "cheaper" stuff goes, i've had good luck with Revlon Colorstay eyeliners. It stays better than any of the other grocery store brands, and blends pretty well. Not quite as well as the expensive stuff, but it'll get the job done. Also, Loreal H.I.P. eyeshadows have higher quality pigments that blend a lot more easily than the other grocery store brands. What you're paying for at Sephora for the "professional" brands is pigment, blendability, and staying power. As someone who recently graduated grad school and did the changeover from cheap grocery store makeup to higher quality stuff, yes - the initial investment is big. But the stuff lasts a really long time. And the quality difference is noticable. But, I wear make-up every day! So for you, maybe just go grab some revlon eyeliner and loreal HIP shadow and call it a day :).
Oh wonderful. Thanks guys. :) I have issues with my eyeshadow fading fast, too, so I'll hang on to the base. I'll probably return the $25 eyeshadow though. :) Part of my job entails playing on playgrounds and drawing with sidewalk chalk in 80 degree weather; I think high-quality makeup is wasted on my typical day!
What about waterproof mascara? Waterproof eye liner? Lipstick/lipliner with some staying power that doesn't feel nasty? (I usually don't wear lipstick because I hate the way it feels. What she put on me at Sephora was nice and didn't come off when I kissed FI - I tested it - but again, $25.)
PS - I'm looking to maybe get cheaper lipstick and splurge on the smashbox gloss to put over it.
Whoa, I would've passed out at that price too. I also have problems with my eye makeup fading, whether it's shadow, eyeliner, or mascara.
For eyeliner, I really like Urban Decay 24/7 eyeliner. I think it's $18 at Sephora, but it's worth it for me because otherwise it just gets smudgy and messy. For mascara, I'm currently using Clinique and like it. I used to get Neutrogena mascara that worked well without flaking/leaving dark marks underneath my eyes, but I don't think they make the specific kind I used anymore.
I just bought cover girl outlast lipstain to test before my wedding. I really like it! I do not like lipstick at all, but I know I will need color. Plus it smells and tastes good! I think it was around $7. It stays on awhile and did not come off when I drank water.
I really like Avon's glimmerstick waterproof eyeliner. It does not fall (smudge or drop down after I put it on) and it stays all day. I think it is between 6 and 8 dollars.
I have been using the covergirl lash blast in the orange tube. I love the big brush. and that is about $8
I use mabyelline dream mousse conceler under my eyes. I love it! It goes on so smooth and lasts all day for me. And that is about $8.
If you couldn't tell, I am a drugstore girl. I just don't have the money to spend on makeup. I did try a victoria;s secret mascara and loved it, but it was way to expensive for me.
Hope this helps!
Pluse, don't drugstores take the makeup back if you don't like them? I heard this somewhere but don't know where and which ones do...
L'Oreal and Revlon and Max Factor have those long-lasting lipsticks which are dual-ended, one side has color and the other side has the clear gloss. I've heard some great things about those, although they do tend to get a bit dry, but if you're using a gloss over them, they should hold up pretty well.
E.L.F. eye shadow is $1 at target for a quad! Holy crap! And no matter what other shadows I buy, I always go back to them. They seem to last all day :) And their colors really pop. You can also buy them at eyeslipsface.com
They have really great makeup that's usually very inexpensive. I also recommend their all over color stick.
My eyelids are very greasy and if I don't wear the Urban Decay Primer Potion, it will crease and come off. Better safe than sorry in my opinion. I do use inexpensive shadows with it though, just whatever tickles my fancy.
www.beautyticket.com has high quality makeup at insanely reasonable prices. I have bought from them a few times and never had any problems with them. The other one I would recommend is www.everydayminerals.com . If you purchase 12 items you get 45% off. Everything from them is fantastic, especially their brushes. And they have a ton of eye shadow choices for $2.50 each and you get more eyeshadow in the pot than you could use in a lifetime.
Hi :)
For me, the best eyeliner & mascara has got to be MAC! The kohl pencil in "Smoulder" and their Plushlash mascara in Black is AMAZING!!! The eyeliner stays put all day and is an intense black. Don't worry though, it can be smudged for a smokey eye and is easily removed at the end of the day. The mascara doesn't flake or smudge, either. I am soooooooooooo glad I found these items - I am recommending them to everyone I know. I should really be on comission for the MAC brand as I buy so much from them and recommend them to anyone who will listen!!!
$25 for an eyeshadow seems really steep - I totally agree that there are better ones out there for a fraction of the cost. The drugstore brands I like are Maybelline, Bloom Cosmetics, Revlon & Rimmel. All of their products seem to do the job and are totally cost-effective.

I debated about this for a long time too, especially about foundation. I tried Make Up For Ever's HD Foundation as well as Mac Studio Fix and didn't like either of them as well as Revlon Colorstay. I am usually a fan of the "get what you pay for" idea when it comes to cosmetics, but I truly love the Colorstay. Also, I second the idea of the Monistat chafing gel for primer- that stuff is awesome! Check out Miss Rainbow's tutorial here. It has some great tips with not too expensive makeup! Good luck girl :]
Check out makeupalley.com. They have reviews on just about every beauty/cosmetic product out there, and forums too. It's sooo addicting! Really helps to decide what to buy, if you're going to be shelling out Sephora prices, or if you usually have to go through several lower-cost products before finding what's decent. I don't know what I ever did before discovering MUA!!

So I went to Sephora for my consult. It actually went surprisingly well. I loved everything she did except I'm not sure that I loved the blush. Then again, I never wear blush and I don't like it on 90% of the people I see wearing it. But anyway.....
So I didn't buy everything she put on me or recommended to me. (Eyebrow gel? Really now?) I did pick the stuff that I really liked and thought I needed - primer, foundation, powder, eyeshadow, liner, concealer, etc. I get to the register and it was $305. I nearly passed out.
So after a long conversation with the very nice staff member, I put away everything but foundation, powder, eyeshadow base, concealer, eyeshadow, and sealer spray (whatever they call it- to keep it all in place). They gave me samples of the primer and green primer/concealer stuff that I loved. It was still $168. I was planning to spend around $100 on ALL my makeup. Maybe that was a little naive, but I don't wear much makeup and it's one of the few things that I can't see spending a ton of money on.
Yes, I KNOW that now I have nice makeup to wear. The thing is, I work with kids with emotional issues. I (and they) really couldn't care less if I'm wearing nice makeup all day. I probably will feel the need to wear nice makeup once every couple of months (if that) once this is all over.
So is there some decent, maybe not AWESOME but decent makeup out there that doesn't cost $25 for each individual piece (eyeshadow, eyeliner, etc.) Something with some staying power. If I wear the fancy sephora eyeshadow base, would that keep Cover Girl eyeshadow in place? :)
PLEASE....recommend the stuff that you love so that I can buy the things I'm missing, and maybe even buy replacements for the Sephora stuff so I can take it back!!!
