I'm behind in planning and am just now starting to look for a photographer for my August 2008 wedding. If you are using someone in that price range, please let me know.
I highly recommend Joel Flory! He did our wedding in October 2006, and shoots with his wife as a team. They were amazing - highly talented and absolutely a joy to work with. Not sure where their pricing is at currently as it may have gone up, but it is definitely worth asking him.
Try Huy Phan. He has a great package for under $2k with unlimited locations and hours for the wedding and he's willing to travel all over Northern California. www.huyphan.com
We're using Carmen Alvarez Photo. Her site is in the process of being updated, but if you contact her, she'll send you links to her most recent shoots. She's fabulous - great eye and wonderful to work with. She has packages in your range, though she may be at the upper edge. That said, she believes that your negatives (or digital files in this day and age) are family heirlooms, so does not charge extra - they are part of the package.
Her packages are only a starting point, with plenty of flexibility to change the number of hours and any bells/whistles.
My super all-inclusive, no limit on hours, all photos edited on DVD and proofs, plus engagement photos was $2500 last year. You can look through the old posts to see her great work!
Although my wedding isn't till September. My photographer, in Santa Cruz, is Neil Simmions. His rates are amazing and he is great to work with so far. His website is:
The photographer, Will Taylor, travels to SF Bay frequently, his work is phenom, personality is very upbeat and fun (I would know, I work with him ) and you can definitely customize your wedding day coverage to fit within your budget.
I'm a full-time wedding photographer in the same area as these guys (so I wouldn't say this about my "competition" unless I truly meant it. I'm around $6,000 for my base package and have tried to convince these guys that they need to raise their prices! They will soon as they are AMAZING so be sure and book them NOW BEFORE THEY DO!!!
Honestly, they take beautiful images AND they are such a blast to be around :)
The package I am getting with Terra Tabbytosavit will be around $1600. For $2000, you'd get 8 or more hours of shooting time and probably both an album and the DVD of images. She's very nice and super responsive. I'm getting married during the last weekend of August. www.terratabbytosavit.com

For 2K, you are even very close to get a 10x10 flush album if you do 6 hr coverage.
