We bought this vacuum a couple of weeks ago (used half dozen times) b/c our bagless cheap-o from target died (Fiance replaced the belt and that messed something up–made a really awful noise when turned on).  It’s on the mid-priced arena.

Our big thing was we wanted a bagged, upright vacuum with a hepa filter.  It’s been great, I have two cats and I had gone a 5 weeks without vacuuming (gross, I know).  It works like a charm and it definitely cleans.  It also has a red/green light feature that tells you how clean the carpet is.  It’s really forced me to slow down my vacuuming.  It’s a vacuum, I don’t think it’s too loud.

EDIT: Fair warning, this vacuum isn’t the heaviest but it also isn’t self propelled either.  Fiance used the attachments and he said it works good–he thinks the hose is short (I don’t think so).

get a Dyson.  If you can save a bit more and expand your budget..get the pet one (its purple).  It’s sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo worth it.  I have 1 dog & 2 cats–everyone long hair and this works wonders.  I’ve loaned it out friends to use as well.

You can also try a refurb or used one too.  Seriously…best.vacuum.ever.

Dyson hands down.  We have three huskies and couldn’t use a different one.  I prefer bagless because I love to be able to just dump the canister in the trashcan.  I think you can get one of the yellow dyson’s for under 300…but I have used many vacuums in my day and I think they are totally worth it!

I don’t like bagless b/c I don’t like how the dust/hair flies everywhere when I dump it in the trashcan.

I can’t reccommend a full-size vacuum, ours isn’t the best but we bought this hand vacuum for the couches/comforters in particular:

It’s amazing! It also does GREAT on the stairs, way better than our attachments! The attachments that come with the vacuum aren’t very good but the vacuum itself is great! Hope this helps, good luck! 🙂

@heathaah:  Our vacuum gives us a dotted line when the bag is full.  It hasn’t shown that yet but I do understand that concern.  My cats (one sheds very little, the other A LOT) don’t shed as much as a lot of dogs.  Also, what type of surfaces are you planning on vacuuming.  Some people vacuum non-carpeted…I don’t (sweep then mop) and I don’t really think this vacuum would be good on that type of surface even though it has that “option.”

Definitely, positively, 100% Dyson.  They actually make a special unit that is made to handle all of the pet hair.  Although a bit on the pricey side, they are worth every penney.  The recently came out with a new version that I’m dying to get, it’s called “The Ball”.  I’m pretty sure they have the animal version in the ball.  My current vacuum is a Dyson and my next one will be as well.  We’ve had ours for quite a long time now and it works as good today as when we purchased it.  I can’t stress enough how great this vacuum is.

We have the Dyson Animal and absolutely love it but it definitely doesn’t fall into the <$300 price range.  I definitely vote for bagless though.  A little bit of dust might escape when you empty it, but it’s really not enough to be worth worrying about.  The hair takes up so much room!  I’d be worried about going through a bunch of bags too.

We have a Kenmore from Sears.  We did extensive research before purchasing our vacuum, and Consumer Reports ranked our vacuum way above the Dyson, so that’s what sold me.  It’s also easier on the wallet than the Dyson.  It has been great for picking up pet hair.  We have a rabbit, and though he might be small, he sheds more than any dog or cat that I have ever met.  I truly don’t understand where all of the hair comes from, but luckily the vacuum picks it all up 🙂

Dyson. Dyson.Dyson. They are the best. I own a dance studio and have almost 300 kids, families, food, and tons of bobby pins. I used to go through a vacuum every 6 months. The Dyson, yellow ball one, has last me a little over a year. I love it so much I got one for home too.

well, i can UNrecomend the bissel pet hair remover. that thing is evil…it will burn your carpet if you don’t keep it moving.
