we are using Jen Ing (jeningphotography.com). she is wonderful to work with, photojournalistic style, and very reasonable.
Hey Jen!
I just got married in Groton two weeks ago! I know it's a long shot but are you getting married at Gibbet Hill by any chance?
Photography has been my [new!]husband's #1 hobby for the past year and a half and he works with Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom for retouching. Great candid shots are definitely his personal style. He wants to get into wedding/engagement photography and is working on compiling his portfolio online, which will probably be done within the next couple of weeks. If you are interested in seeing his work (since you are wanting two photographers on hand) let me know!
Edit: Hopefully this post wasn't too pimpy for you!
This might be too personal, but would you mind posting your budget? I *highly* recommend my wedding photographer Ashley O'Dell (she's in Boston), but I have a feeling you might consider her to be over your budget. Also, we only hired her for 7 hours -- not the full day. Her photos are ah-mazing, and I decided to choose quality over quantity. I figure in 7 hours we'll probably get at least 700 gorgeous pictures, so full-day coverage was not a necessity for us. Also, she generally shoots with a second shooter, although our wedding is in Maine, and she won't be bringing her second shooter on the trip...
My Sister used Michael Sparks Keegan, he was awesoem and had much better pricing than others in the area. He is part of a husband/wife team and they give you copyright of the photos, which is cheaper for printing. They were awesome and people are always commenting on my sister's photos. pm me if you want more info.!
http://www.dodgeimagery.com/index.htm I am using Dodge Imagery. They have very reasonable prices, you get two photographers and all the right to your pictures.
@EDINA - I got married at Gibbet Hill too!!!
We used Mark Alcarez of Arc Weddings. He was awesome. I was so so happy with his work and also with his level of professionalism and his attitude. I couldn't recommend him highly enough. We had an evening wedding as well and a first look. I got 9 hours (with two photographers) for $1200 which included a 4x6 of all the photos and the digital copies on CD's. My wedding was offseason in March so in season pricing will be a little higher.. but I'm sure still reasonable.
We're using Kelly Prizel, who's based in New Haven CT. We absolutely love her work AND her as a person, so we're thrilled. It was also way better for us financially to pay to bring her up (a travel fee) to Boston, then to book with a Boston photog. We booked in 2009, so she's raised her prices (she's a hot ticket these days!), but I think she's still darn affordable. We adore her, and highly recommend her based upon her awesomeness as a person and the e-pics we had done by her.
@Moose Yay! You're the first fellow Gibbet Hill bee I've encountered. That place is amazing!!
@Edina... I know! I have been looking for a Gibbet Hill Buddy. We were so happy with them. A friend of the family had been married there about 5 years ago and as soon as I mentioned going to look my father was allllll about it, he kept saying "That was the best wedding food I ever ate.. let's definitely have it there!"
AH! Thanks so much for ALL the amazing responses. I will definitely have to check these out.
We were hoping to spend under $3000 and are finding most photographers to be more in the $4-6(!!!)K range when they offer everything we want. Sorry - I should have included this in the original post, it totally would have made things more logical :)
@Edina, @Moose1209 GIBBET HILL BUDDIES! So excited!! Moose, I would love to hear any advice you have :) And Edina, send the portfolio along! I look at any wedding photography I can get my hands on :)
Edit: Edina, I just re-read that you already did your wedding there too! Advice from you toooo!
@Jen It will be so beautiful. I'm not sure who you are working with there (we worked with Carolyn) but the entire staff there is wonderful. I'd love to post some pics of our outdoor ceremony, but I have posted a pre-wedding rant or two about MIL (c'mon who hasn't) and I'm paranoid of somehow being exposed haha. Maybe I can get those threads deleted and post away! :) I'll send you his portfolio link when it is ready. Feel free to PM with more Gibbet Hill questions!
I used Erica Ferrone for my wedding last year and was thrilled with our pictures!
I just went to a wedding at Gibbet Hill and it was gorgeous! I hear you- most photogs up here go in the 4K range. i am using Channing Johnson- I just love his photography, and figured it was worth it to splurge on photos..http://www.channingjohnsonblog.com/
My wedding photographer would be approximately in your budget - Lisa Rigby! She's AMAZING. We did our engagement photos with her, she's super personable, really knows her stuff, and is a real up-and-comer. Her website is www.lisarigbyphotography.com. I'm also a photographer, and have really researched her second shooters that she sometimes works with - they are really kick ass.
@littlecat - Oh yeah, we were totally going for the splurge too! And thought our budget WAS splurging!! Oh well, we'll definitely make something work!
We're using John LoConte-www.johnlophoto.com He is shooting our engagement pictures in two weeks and I can't wait! He has been great to work with so far, very accomodating and I really love his pictures. We haven't worked with him yet but I have heard nothing but great reviews about him. Best of luck in your photog search!
@ Jen, we are using David Bibeault, his biggest package in 2008 that includes everything was under $3k, I'm sure his prices have gone up, but he had great packages and may still have something under 3k. He travels too, I know he's done E-sessions in NY in the past.
We worked with Sara at Gibbet Hill.. she was really awesome too. I'm guessing you won't be working with her because at my wedding a few months ago she was about to have a baby any second. We had a wedding planner as well but honestly, Gibbet Hill is so well run you really won't need a planner or a DOC. They pretty much do all of that for you. We stopped by on Friday and dropped everything off and they had it set up perfectly when we arrived for the reception. I'm in TN so I had to plan long distance and they were just so accomodating. Send me a PM if you want to see my pictures and consider the photog we used. Good luck!
Thanks @starfish and @saeliz! I've now bookmarked all these photographers and will be check them out! Its a great way to procrastinate when I need a break from studying for the bar!
I am also using David Bibeault and his prices are very reasonable. We did our e-pics last summer and I looove how they came out. We negotiated a $50 travel fee back in 2008, when gas prics were very high. Not bad to have him travel from RI to north of Boston!
We're using Marisa Cohen who is REALLY reasonably priced. For 9 hours, rights included, we're paying $1350. Her work is gorgeous too. www.marisacohen.com
Marisa doesn't have a second shooter, but we also met with Amanda from Boro Photos [www.borophotos.com] who was also less than $2K and had a second shooter included in the package.
Good luck!
PS: as a personal friend of Edina, her husband's photography skills and pictures are awesome. Seriously incredible what that guy can do! :)
we've just begun our search after googling hours and hours for photographers! we found blush photo of natick. We found karen's work fantastic and her prices quite reasonable (would like to keep it around $1600). She also has videography. Her site is www.blushweddingfilms.com.

www.littlefangphoto.com - Lindsey Brisbine! She's amazing. I did my boudoir shots with her and we are excited to have her shoot our special day. Her husband will be the second shooter, and I cannot wait! Her prices are very reasonable and listed on her website.
who did you end up going with? am giong to be married in MA and looking for a photog..
We're using Lisa Rigby (www.lisarigbyphotography.com). She is around your price range, and is amazing to work with. We are actually flying her out to CA for our wedding (wanted someone I could meet with in person and have e-pics in Boston with!), and we are having many more hours than you (she'll be there for the rehearsal dinner as well, and the travel costs, obviously!). But I believe her "normal" packages like what you want are under $3,000.
We used Jeff Turner of Black Thumb Studios, and could not be more happy with the end result.
Good luck!
I'm also now looking at videographers - anyone have advice along those lines? Thanks so much Boston Bees :)
I'm also using Jen Ing as our photographer and I LOVED how our engagement photos turned out. There are some pics in my Bio section.
We are using David Bettencourt as our videographer. He's based out of Providence, Rhode Island but doesn't charge a travel fee. He's doing 8 hours of coverage, has an assistant, and is shooting part of the film in Super 8 film for about $2K. He's really flexible with his packages depending on your budget.
Zev Fisher is amazing! def check him out! www.zevfisher.com
Andy Sussman, Managing Director, TSG Weddings, Boston Wedding DJs & Lighting http://www.tsgweddings.com
Hi Ladies... I am a Gibbet Hill bride too! Gorgeous doesn't even cover it ;)
and to reply about the photog's.... one of my higher points in my budget... but the husband & wife team & their pic's are AMAZING. www.hinkleyphoto.com
Hi There!
I know this thread is a bit old, but I wanted to connect with you to share another option. I've been doing photography (headshots and seniors) part time and am getting into wedding photography. I'm working with a local wedding photographer here in Boston and am learning a lot about wedding photography and reccetnly upgraded all of my equipment. You can look at my blog at www.summerstreetphotography.com and we can connect if you're interested!
I'm also getting married in 2011 (but in June) so I've been scouring wedding blogs for over a year and can achieve almost any photography style you wish. I'd love to chat with you if you're interested! I would definately be in your price range.
My best,
Kendra

Hey everyone!
I wanted to see if anyone had any advice about photography and photographer choices. I've just started some preliminary searching, but I've been SHOCKED at the cost and limitations by so many of the photographers I've exchanged emails with.
To give some background, I fell in love with a wedding photographer in North Carolina that a friend of mine was featured on, and have been following her blog for a good year or so. When I first got engaged, I shot her an email...just to see what the possibility was, not thinking it would be an option. But now I'm finding that flying her and her husband up, putting them up in a hotel, and having them both for an ENTIRE day of shooting (no time restraints, within reason) is looking like the cheaper option! The only reason I hesitate is the possible added stress I might feel day of, in terms of getting them in and out of the airport, etc. That would also probably be the first time we met them in person.
But now, getting estimates way over our estimated budget is really freaking me out! Does anyone have any recommendations? Suggestions? It would be really helpful!
PS - We are getting married in Groton, and having a night ceremony with a first look. I really prefer a more photojournalistic style, with many many candids. I feel like anyone with a camera can get formals done well enough :) I would also really prefer to have TWO photographers day of.
Thanks so much guys!
