There's a new resort in San Diego...The Grand Del Mar...it's amazingly gorgeous and perfect for a getaway!! Look at the website!!! :)
Catalina Island is great for a minimoon or a weekend getaway. It actually feels like a different country. If you like wine, central coast (Cambria, Santa Ynez Valley, or Solvang) is great.
i'm not sure what your budget is, but the bacar resort in santa barbara is an awesome place for a minimoon. i went to a wedding there and the food was fantastic. the resort is within walking distance of the beach and a short drive away from cute shops and good restaurants. i didn't get a chance to go wine tasting but i've heard that there are some great wineries in the area too.
I'm from Santa Barbara and it's a wonderful place! I wish I had never moved away! If you want any suggestions for restaurants, hotels, things to do, etc just ask! I am very familiar with the surrounding areas as well. There are SO many wonderful, yummy restaurants- you could go to a new romantic place every night. The wineries are about 45 mins-1hr away, so you'd want to take a tour, but there are lots and lots of things to do in SB. I especially recommend Bouchon or Downey's. I am getting hungry just thinking about them! Let me know if you have any other questions!
*Love* Santa Barbara! Here is a great site I just found the other day. I think they give great hotel options for minimoon or even your honey moon. www.tablethotels.com They have a few Santa Barbara hotels listed and they look perfect! FYI - Cali is cool in December. If your looking for warmer weather I would suggest FL.
"shutters on the beach" in santa monica has rooms w/ balconies. another mini-moon option in so cal would be the ojai valley inn & spa.
Mleeeee- yes, CA can be cool, but we've also had christmases (more than not!) where it's 75 degrees and we go to the beach. Santa Barbara is right on the water, which means that it stays a lot warmer during the winter.
Ojai is awesome also!
I think the post you are thinking about is Mrs. Tulip'? They h'mooned in Monterey/Big Sur. One of the Knottie bios from yesterday also honeymooned in SC, Santa Barbara I believe - and there was a picture of her and her new hubby having breakfast on the balcony....
San Diego, and anywhere else up the coast(as others have mentioned) would be great honeymoon destinations.
I love the Surf & Sand hotel in Laguna Niguel (between San Diego and LA) and the Loew's hotel on Coronado Island in SD. December is unreliable in SoCal; it might be really hot or it might be cold-- depending on the week.

I am getting married in December and we are considering a mini-moon in the States and postponing our big vacation until next year.
I remember a bee (in the fall?) blogging about an amazing mini-moon in California - I think there were pictures of her balcony and room and I remember thinking the place looked amazing. I've been searching for a long time and can't figure out which bee it was.
Can you help me find that post? Have any general recommendations? Will the weather be warm?
