I am getting married in August and my fiance is from France. His family are originally from Portugal, so while they speak French & Portuguese, they don’t speak any English. My family speaks very limited French and no Portuguese. The registrar marrying us is conducting the ceremony in both French & English, so that’s not a worry, but I don’t have any French readings. Can anyone recommend some lovely readings that would go over well in a non-religious ceremony? Have lots of ideas in English but stuck for French ones…. help! Thanks! 🙂

There’s a really nice reading from The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince, A. de St. Exupery) about loving someone/something. It’s a conversation between the Prince and a fox…. I swear it’s cuter when you read it. 🙂 Probably a couple of others from that book too.

I had a reading from the children’s book The Little Prince, which was originally written in French. I imagine it would be beautiful in the original language. I don’t have the excerpt in front of me but it’s chapter 21, where the little prince tames the fox. (“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye… You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.”) We used pretty much the whole chapter and it was the only reading we had, but you could use just an excerpt and have it in both languages. Our ceremony was nonreligious and everyone loved the reading, there were quite a few tears when it was read.
