OK so for those who didn’t read my post the other day, my Mom told us she was going to pay for our honeymoon. The UK was the first place to come to mind because I’ve ALWAYS wanted to go and I knew we wouldn’t be able to afford it on our own, and I was so excited because I’ve never really had someone tell me I can go anywhere in the whole world…the catch is that i only had one week, travel time included.
I started planning it, pricing things, and ALMOST booked our flights. I mean it was practically a for sure thing…..and then worry and doubt set in. I thought of how everyone has told me its too ambitious. We were wanting to go not just to London but to Edinburgh, Cardiff, possibly Paris, The Isle of Skye. Even chopping our destinations in half would be a lot. I started thinking about a lot of other things. I will be leaving the last day of finals, I’m going to be in an intense medical program and ill have only one week off…I don’t deal with stress well and the more I thought about all the traveling the less fun it sounded. Then I looked up prices for things in London and thought about all the other places I will miss out on due to limited time there. Then I thought about how I live in Portland and by the end of March I will be dying to see the sun, and not necessarily go to a place with basically the same weather we have here.
I WANT to go to the UK so bad….but it just seems like the wrong time for us! Somewhere sunny and relaxing sounds like it will help me rest up and re-energize. I spend about 40 hours a week studying, I have a 5 year old, and up until now I’ve been doing it all on my own. School hasn’t started back yet but I am sure by then I will need a break! I don’t have any specific destinations in mind now really, just general ideas (Mexico, Hawaii). So maybe you ladies can help me out with ideas. Here are my requirements: must be close enough that 7 days is enough time for flights AND seeing things. Beaches are nice and I love them, but I will not go someplace just to go the beach. If there are beaches there must also be stunning topography and views other than just the beach (hmm Hawaii?). I am a history buff and I want to see ruins! We live in a very beautiful region up he in the Northwest and would like to go someplace equally beautiful! Ok ideas? Thank you ladies!
Places I’ve traveled to: Acupulco, Aruba, Curaçao, St. Thomas, Grand Cayman, Jamaica, Alaska, Vancouver, Costa Rica, Panama, Hawaii

If you only have a week, I would postpone your UK/Euro trip to when you will have at least 2 weeks (ideally, more!). I’m sure it could be amazing and wonderful for that week but you’d also be missing out on a lot. Also, it takes about 9 hours to get to the UK from the West Coast which eats up almost 2 full days which would really only leave you with 5 days. If you were just staying in London, that would actually be OK but if you’re wanting to cram everything else, it could make the trip more stressful. So it sounds like your options are:
1. Cram everything into a week (or less)
2. Just go to London and maybe a day trip or two elsewhere
3. Chuck the whole thing and go somewhere tropical
Thinking about it, if you don’t think you’ll ever make it to the UK again or for a very long time, maybe Option 2 is the best.
Either way, you’re going to have an amazing time off! =D Good luck!
