we’re doing rectangle tables for our reception instead of rounds and we have the option of 8’x30″ tables for free or paying for 8’x36″ tables. we are not having traditional flower centerpieces but are instead having candles in candleholders, jars and vases all throughout the center of the tables.
my concern is that with full place settings the 8’x30″ inches will be too narrow and guests will be uncomfortable. but obviously I’d prefer not to have to pay an additional fee.
have any of you ladies used 8’x30″ tables? or been at a wedding/event that used these tables? how was the spacing?

A rule of thumb is that you need a minimum of 12″ depth per place setting. That would leave only 6″ down the middle. This is a pic of a 30″ wide table. The dinner plates are almost touching.

If you are concerned about spacing could you have two people less (one on each side) of the smaller tables and just add one more of the free tables to your venue?

Another option would be to stagger the place settings so there were 4 on one side and only 3 on the other. This may not work well though, if most of your guests are couples.
