On Saturday, on our way home from vacation, we stopped for breakfast with friends in Atlanta. Our dog, Brutus, slipped his collar while my friend was walking him and his own dog and our dog ran into traffic (in downtown Atlanta!!!) and just kept going. We spent a few hours looking for him, but then we had to leave for home. We could not miss more work.
My two friends prepared posters and put them up yesterday. I took to social media–twitter, facebook, all sorts of facebook pet groups, Craigslist, etc. So many people helped us out sharing our posts. We also called local shelters, vets, and animal control services and made sure his microchip information was up-to-date. Then, a friend of a friend who shared our facebook post suggested the Atlanta subreddit. I posted there and today a wonderful person emailed me that he had seen Brutus on Saturday but was not able to get Brutus into his home. He had gotten some carrots and cheese (Brutus’ favorite treats) and spent a few hours yesterday looking for him in vain.
I emailed him back thanking him for his help. I gave him my number and within minutes of sending my response, he called me to say that he had seen Brutus again and was outside going through backyards looking for him. I got him in contact with my friends and together they found Brutus and he is now safe with my friends. I cannot wait to see him.
I’m so amazed at how well a community mobilized to help me and that a complete stranger worked so hard to help us. I hope none of you ever go through this, but if you do, there is nothing too silly to try. I had never posted to Reddit before and I’d only ever read a few threads on random things like science puns, but that’s what worked for us. You truly do never know what will work. Sometimes we focus on the dangers of the internet and all that, but the internet also magnifies the power of our communities and connects us in new, powerful ways.

mrsSonthebeach: I’m SO glad that your dog was found, the thought of my dog being lost makes me heartsick. It is pretty amazing how a community can come together through a post online and make something great happen.

mrsSonthebeach: what a great story and I’m so glad he was found safe and sound! Can’t wait till your reunited with him! My dog ran away back as a puppy and we alerted the police. Hours later the police called us that a young couple had a dog matching the description in their car. We were able to get her home thanks to that awesome couple who rescued her. The real finale was the couple drove the same exact car as I did at the time and our dog kept chasing their car ( thinking it was mine I guess). They pulled over and opened the door and she jumped right in and went to sleep. Thank goodness there are good people in the world huh?!

Thanks, everyone. We are so happy he is safe. I’ve taken off work tomorrow so we can drive to Atlanta and pick him up. It seems like he probably broke one of his legs, so we’ll have to get him to the vet as soon as possible.

This tugs at my heart strings! SO happy and that guy is your dogs guardian angel!
I hope everyone who sees a lost dog stops to help. He might be someone’s world, or could be in the future 🙂
I hope if my dogs were to ever get loose, someone would check their microchip and help them.

That’s great! So glad to hear you got him back. Losing my dog like that is one of my biggest fears.

Wow, that’s really amazing! I’m so happy you found your doggy, you guys must have been so worried and poor dog must have felt so lost. My fiance’s family lost their old dog a little while back and they didn’t try as hard as you did to find him. It sucks cause he was so well behaved and he was gonna be my dog too when me and my fiance moved in together! Your dog is lucky to have such caring owners and helpful reddit strangers.
