We had a honeyfund registry and actually added some furniture or other unusual items that we wanted, in addition to our honeymoon. I.e. for larger items, we broke it down into several pieces, so it would be a contribution towards i.e. a new TV stand, etc. You have furniture picked out and a photo is on-line, then you can link to it so people know what they are contibuting towards.
You can also have your mom/FMIL spread the word that you will be pretty much sitting on the floor in your new place, which might encourage people to give cash.
We registered for a bed at C&B and some bookshelves. We're in the same situation, never having lived together. Check and see what the completion discount is for your gift registry. For instance, if we get a fair amount of gift cards + completion discount post-wedding, we can buy the bed with wedding presents.
People always say to register for a few high-ticket items in case a group of people want to go in on a big gift. I just figured some furniture would be that high ticket item!
I don't know anything about registering because I am not. But I think you can register for gift cards. I have seen this on registries belonging to friends of mine. So maybe that would help, combined with the above suggestions from family/friends that you need big ticket items.
I registered for furniture simply for the completion discount. Turns out that I got some from guests (relatives and non-relatives) as a wedding gift!
These are all great sugguestions! Thanks everyone! Our Macy's registry won't let us register for furniture and there isn't too much at BB&B...any ideas on another store that might be best for furniture?
Target, Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, or any of the decor stores in a mall
Pottery Barn is a great option, because you can use their gift cards at Williams Sonoma too. Crate and Barrel is always awesome too.
Or Restoration Hardware. *drool*
We need some major furniture too. Wedefinitely have some college furniture and I'm dying to get rid of my futon and get a real sofa. We'll be registering at Target so any gift cards can help us get furniture for our apartment. I'm currently using my bedroom furniture my parent bought me when I was 10, its looking prett sad, so I'm hoping to re-stain it and make it look a little better so we can focus on parts of our place that company will actually see.

Hi Hive!
My TooBee and I registered at Macys and BB&B already and are VERY happy with those choices. However, we need A LOT of things (we aren't living together and have both always happened to live with people who have everything). As such, we are literally starting from scratch. One of the biggest things we need is furniture! Obviously we don't expect anyone to buy us a nice new couch to cuddle on, but we want people to know that that's what we desperately need. I feel weird asking for gift cards for furniture and don't know a good way to do this.
Does anyone have any good ideas of places to register for big ticket items or any furniture stores they love? Thanks!
