I don't see why you can't put it on your registry. Then if people don't buy it, you can use your registry completion discount. No one is going to be looking and seeing that you have 9 place settings instead of 8.
I agree go ahead and put it on your registry because you never know what people are wanting to gift you. And if you don't get it then you can buy it later with gift cards and your discount.

I've heard (and agree) that it's good to have an extra place setting of dishes. Does it make sense to register for that extra setting? Or is the convention to pick one up yourselves?
