I would say April or May is an okay time to start registering since it will take some time to complete the registry. There's nothing wrong with doing it too early except with certain stores, your design gets discontinued before people get to buy them!
if you're registering for staples that won't run out (fine china, pots and pans like all-clad, etc.) i think you can go ahead and do it now! we're getting married in september and we've already had people get us engagement gifts from our registry (we registered for non-seasonal, staple-esque items). it's definitely not complete at all, but i would rather give people options of what we actually want rather than get random engagement gifts!
Some of the stores say that if you register more than a season early (such as registering in the spring for a fall wedding) you will need to update your registry in order to remove items that may no longer be stocked. For instance, you might pick out sheets and comforter that aren't available any more. So you won't avoid having to work on your registry as your wedding gets closer, although you can do that online, so you may save yourself the running around to actual stores. It is true that things like cookware and china are less likely to change over the course of a year.
I'm just under the five month mark and I'm SO not looking forward to registering. Is that bad? I decided to do our invitations and I'm in the midst of figuring out the whole "required marital counseling, can it be done by catholics even if we're getting married in a lutheran church because FI didn't get an annullment because he's not catholic, but i am" thing. With work, I just don't think I can add "registry" to the plate right now. How LATE is too late to register?
I am getting married in October and I just finished registering last weekend. I went to Macy's and Crate and Barrel and neither place seemed to think that it was too early. Macy's did show us a list of items that are guaranteed to be in stock and available in stores for at least the next year so if you choose to register there for certain items you can reduce the likelihood of having to update your selections.
jma19 - we are having a Lutheran service, and they definately wanted us to go through counseling with the pastor who will marry us (not just Lutheran counseling, or just at their church). I don't know if this is our church, or our pastor, but it totally makes sense to me. After all, this is his main opportunity to get to know us. And we don't want somebody who doesn't even know us doing our ceremony.
FYI our date is July 12 and we are going to start registering later this month. We have picked 4 consecutive weekends and plan to spend part of a day each weekend (only one store per weekend). So we will be done by mid-April. I think that as long as you are done before your invitations go out you're good.
We're getting married August 2nd and just did our registry this past weekend. I think it depends on whether you're having other events, like engagement party, bridal shower, etc and the timing of those events.
Some people register the week after their engagement due to people throwing them engagement parties. Others do not need to register until before their bridal shower.

Hello fellow engaged girls! I am getting married in October and I am trying to get alot of stuff taken care of ahead of time so I am not stressed when it gets closer to our wedding. I am wondering when is the best time to register? What is too early?
