We're getting married in June and already are registered. We had an engagement party last month and got a lot of stuff from it as gifts for the party. I thought it was kinda early but no one said anything about it. Just keep in mind that if you do Target or somewhere with a lot of seasonal items they may not be around as your shower approaches.
I would wait until the beginning of next year because some places may discontinue things or get new things that you want.
Within a year is fine, especially if you're having a big wedding or your invitees are very spread out. Just make sure it's well stocked before any wedding related events:invitations going out, showers, etc.
I started mine a month after we got engaged. I figure I can amend them as I go but a lot of people were asking where we were registered as soon as we announced our engagement.
I started our registry about 8 months out and I had to go back and edit it because, like PP said, some of the stuff I wanted wasn't available anymore. I say you can start putting the extremely common things on the list now, but if it's something that you think is seasonal or might have limited quanties, etc. I would wait until 4-6 weeks before your shower to go gangbusters with it.
@ModernCinderella: Love your username :)
As for your question, I know I'm outside the norm but I started my registry pretty much right after getting engaged. I did this partly because the idea of doing it all in one shot when I'm in the stressful, intense wedding planning stage scared me. Also, when my sister was engaged last year, people used her registry to shop for the holidays for her and her now DH even though their wedding wasn't till June. The only negative of registering so early is that you need to check back often to make sure everything is still available. I don't mind that though because I'm using MyRegistry.com so it's super easy to add and edit right from my couch :) Right now DH and I have been basically using it as a wishlist but we'll probably get more serious about it around the holidays and then do some final editing when my sister sends out shower invites.
