When am I supposed to register?

Theknot.com says to register right away after getting engaged, but some places say 9 months, some say 6 months... I am so confused!

The reason it's kind of important is because both my family and his family (and some of his parents' friends) want to host engagement parties and while I know you SHOULD NOT by any means expect gifts, I don't think it would be terrible to put a couple of things on there to show what we like, or something like that--that's what the Knot said.

I am so new at this! Help!

There are lots of different thoughts on when to register, but if you register now you will more than likely get some gifts that you register for as well as things not listed.

When we had out engagement party in leu of gifts we asked our friends and family to bring some of their favorite recipes.  Some people still brought us small gifts but now it made a really nice cook book for us to share.  Just an idea.

    Good luck!

i didn't register for anything for my engagement party because i wasn't expecting gifts at all... or thinking people would get us stuff from our registery.

about 1/4th of the gave me gifts anyways... i got mostly money and macy gift cards... then i got some picture frames and towels and some random wiskey glasses....

it was a nice surprise.  ^_^

if you don't care than that's okay, you could probably return whatever random things people give you if they happen to get something for you.

Register for at least some things before the engagement parties.  Some people will want to bring gifts, and some of those people would prefer to shop from a registry, and it makes it more likely you'll get something you want.  You by no means have to register for EVERYTHING.  Pick 10-20 items in a range of prices for now.

    Thanks so much everyone!

@tallgal I love that idea! It's so sweet and probably yields a lot of tasty recipes!
