If you like steak, I highly recommend J Gilbert's in Glastonbury! http://www.jgilberts.com/default.aspx
@lefeymw: I'd actually like to stay away from fancy - more of a comfortable place where we can feel relaxed, but still with good food and a nice atmosphere!
Plan B in Glastonbury could be good. They have an outdoor patio if it is nice enough in early May. Its a nice burger place, but not too casual. The right amount of nice/casual with a broad menu.

Pond House Cafe is a gorgeous spot in Elizabeth Park that has a nice garden feel, but not sure if the entrees are a bit more pricey than you want

Saddlers Ordinary in Marlborough has a great old New England Historic Feel. Nice family owned atmosphere and a wide variety of food and prices

@lefeymw: Oh man, now I am craving a Plan B burger so badly...and they are so far away....(must move back to CT so that I can have better burgers)
@Leprechaun: I actually live in the Bay area :(. My sister goes there all the time and it makes me jealous.
I just heard that Saddlers Ordinary may be closing. Sad.
@maybride12: My suggestion would be Max Amore. They have a really beautiful private room that seats 35 or so. It's all glass and has these huge sliding doors that seperate the space from their main dining room. We did one big square table and we had 27 people. It was perfect and allowed for everyone to talk. It was reasonably priced as well. Plus the event planner their might be the sweetest person to deal with, her name is Jessica. The day we signed our contract they also comp'd our brunch, which sealed the deal for me :)
We actually went to Plan B last night for dinner. Mmmm...so yummy! Their out door patio only has 4 pub tables though so not enough space for a rehearsal dinner, but they do have an area that they can curtain off for private parties.
If you want to do something a little different right in Hartford is an upscale Mexican restaurant called Agave. (the pics on their website are cheesy so ignore) They have a private space as well that also has a tv mounted on the wall where one of my brides played family photos during the rehearsal. Plus the restaurant also allowed for their guests to order right off the menu with no exclusions for the one agreed per person price.
Rooftop 120 just opened and they also do private parties. They are an outdoor bar and lounge with an upscale menu and have a small inside space for private sit down meals. They are open all year and have everything heated so you could enjoy something outside in May regardless of the weather.
@mwitter80: Oh good call! Most of the Max restaurants would probably be good! (I havent been to all)
There are several
Max Amore
Max Amia
Max Fish
Max Tavern
Max Burger
Max's Oyster Bar
@lefeymw: I love the Max restaurants. Max Amore, Max Tavern, and Trumbull Kitchen by Max have a more laid back atmosphere and have more intimate private spaces. I think Max Amore just happened to have recognizeable food choices for some of our picky eater groomsmen since they serve Italian style dishes with a modern twist.

I was wondering if anyone had suggestions for a good, but reasonable rehearsal dinner site within 15 minutes of Hartford? I will be having around 20 guests if that helps. Thanks!!
