you could just give her a call and tell her you thought she was joking (which you did) and kindly ask her not to do it. Just say "its just not my thing - I would rather not have people wear funny hats." Hopefully she will be understanding and not do it.
Yeah, just call her and let her know that you were only kidding. If it's no big deal, then let it go...it might be fun.
Ugh, that sucks :( I would have FI say something to her -- just mention that you were joking and it's not really your thing. Or, better yet, he could say it's not HIS thing! In all honesty, that's what I would do. Good luck!

My FMIL has started to plan the rehearsal dinner and while we were on the phone the other day she said (while laughing) "All the girls should wear big straw hats". I followed it up jokingly with "Yes and the guys can wear fedoras."
Key word in that last sentence... joking. I thought I was clear about the joke. Yes I was... and now she's not. I just got an email saying she's having everyone wear hats. How do I fix this?? What can I say that won't upset her? I don't want everyone wearing hats. Do I just not worry about it and let it happen?
