I'm getting married 1 week after my 21st birthday. I just recived my license renewal paper in the mail. I was confused because I know I have to be married to change it to my new name but I wont be "Married" until May 22. (My Bday is may 14) So I called the secretary of state (Who was very rude and talked to me like I was dumb) and he said "Well you obviously cant get one with your new name" And I said "I know but why would I renew my license just to wait for it to come in the mail and have to change it right away? And I dont want to pay the late fees if I wait to renew it after I get marrie" And then he said "Well your going to have to pay the late fees. Your going to either; A: renew your license late and pay the late fee or B: Renew it and immidietly change it and pay that fee"..... Well number 1: Why would I renew my license AFTER I get married and not be able to celebrate my 21st birthday or drink at my OWN wedding? and number 2: why would I renew it right now just to wait for it to come in the mail to change it again????

Any ladies out there understand this or work for the secretary of state and can help me out?!??!??!?!

I think it is just a Sh***y situation!

I think you should renew your license and then pay to change your name after you are married. It is illegal any other way.

Think of it this way - you did not plan your wedding around you license renewal. So if you license renewal or wedding occurred any other time of the year you would have to go through the same process.

    Sorry!

Maybe the Secretary was rude because it's not his job to handle license problems? Does your state have a Department of Motor Vehicles office? They would probably be more help.

I agree that the Department of Motor Vehicles would probably be the more appropriate place to contact.  I would definitely get your license renewed on time - you certainly don't want the stress of getting pulled over or something right before your wedding with an expired license!

Hey we have the same wedding date :).

But it looks like you're stuck here. Its best to renew your licence with your current name & then pay later to change it. Otherwise, if you drive with an expired license & get pulled over, that's a ticket & you may even get your license revoked/suspended. Not trying to scare you! If you're not planning on driving that week than maybe find out which would be less, to get a new license or to pay the late fees.

Also I think you have to receive your marriage license before you can change your driver's license.  And I'm not sure if you have to change your social security card before your driver's license.  Either way, keep in mind that it might take a bit of time to get that all done.

Also, you don't have to get your new name license right away. I have a friend who waited months to get it done because the name changing thing was so complicated!

I don't know about the venue for sure, but ours knew that my husband and I were over 21 so we didn't have to have our IDs there to be carded if we wanted to drink.  It is possible that it might take a few weeks or more to get your marriage license back so it might be a while that you won't be able to legally drive.

Just so everyone knows, original poster was correct to call the Secretary of State. Michigan is weird and has no DMV. I know i was confused for years when tv shows talked about the DMV and I had never even seen one before.

Kare, I agree with everyone else that you should probably just renew your license then pay the fee after to change your name.  Definitely less risky when driving that way. Good luck!

@roxymarie - Wow!  I had no idea that some states don't have a DMV!  That makes more sense now though.  I had never heard of calling the Secretary of State for something like that before!

P.s I think I am just going to change my license and everything else a little while later. Just less hassle and less risky then driving without a renewed license. Especially since the wedding is a 2 hr drive away. Now I can see why some woman dont even bother to take the guys name!

@Eva- I don't blame you guys for saying that. I was a little thrown off at first when I saw you guys saying not to call the Secretary of State until I remembered that we're the weird ones, not you guys!

Well, since you guys don't have a DMV, Mr. Secretary of State should have been a little more courteous!
