I’ve been living in my current rental for about 6 months now. We went into it knowing it wasn’t perfect, but decided to look over this because we’re not going to be here forever. Plus, the landlord seemed pretty receptive- he put in all new windows and a new stove for us.
I was wrong.
When I first toured the apartment the bathtub was a little worse for the wear but I figured it would be all cleaned up before we moved in. We moved in and it sitll looked pretty beat up. It is an old porcelain tub that is no longer smooth on the bottom so there are these set-in stains (rust) that just don’t come out. That, compounded with the fact that the bathroom has NO windows or ventilation system and you’ve got yourself a problem.
When we first moved in I brought it up to the landlord and he just kind of brushed me off. “The tub is 30 years old”, blahblahblah. I even asked what I could use to clean it and he said “whatever works on porcelain”. I’ve tried a pumice sitck, magic erasers, scrubbing bubbles, soft scrub w/ bleach and dawn soap mixed with vinegar.
Nothing has worked and it has been 6 months and I feel like a total idiot. I just kind of let it slide when I first moved in because there were other issues going on between the windows and the stove and a smell in our air vents.
Does anything think there is a way I can approach my landlord about this now? What should I say? How should I phrase it?
Another issue is that my husband and I are looking to buy a house and if it actually happens we may have to sublet the apartment. I feel like no one is going to want to take over our lease with a bath tub that looks so bad.
