I'm not in your area, but will be renting from our baker -- I think it's about $50-75 for one like what you've got pictured.
Yes, check with your cake vendor. All that we met with offered a cake stand (some provided it free-of-charge with the purchase, some with a rental fee or deposit).
Ours looked identical to that, and only required a refundable deposit. These silver stands are becoming more common.
It is really almost cheaper to buy one yourself than to rent it. I got one like the one pictured above from "Hobby Lobby" online. $49.99 with free shipping.
Save-on-crafts has a few for sale as well. I got the $49.85 one (came out to $62.40 with tax and shipping to south bay).
I rented an almost identical one from Classic Party Rentals SF (the pick-up warehouse is in Burlingame though). It came to $30 - it was an 18-inch square one.
I also went to our party/event rental company. The cake "pedestal" - 17" costed as much as $56+ $20 shipping to buy, so we opted to rent it for $31.
Our florists had one that they let us use for free. Ask your caterers, cake vendors, florists...see what they've got laying around that you could rent or use.

Anyone know where I can rent a cake stand and approximately how much it costs to rent?
