So last year my fiance bought my ring from Blue Nile. They allowed us to purchase the setting only since he was putting a diamond that used to belong to my mom. Well the jewler that he took it to have the diamond set at just resued the prongs that were already on my mom’s ring. I feel like I am being super picky about this, but I absolutely hate how the prongs look with my ring. They are 14K white gold as is the setting, but they look so yellow compared to my ring, they sit up too high which annoys the hell out of me because it hits and catches on everything and i’m terrifed I am going to knock the diamond off and lose it, and I feel like the prong head just doesnt look right with the ring. The ones that blue nile have on their rings are basket prongs and I feel they fit the ring so much better.
FI agreed to let me put new prongs on and he asked the jewler who said they would help design me something that I would like better. I am worried though since we plan on replacing this diamond in the next few years (since it belonged to my mom I don’t feel that it is truly “mine”) with something bigger and I am worried that it will damage the setting to have to remove the prongs more than once. The jeweler said it wont be a problem, but I am not so sure.
Has anyone else had prongs replaced multiple times with or without a horror story from it?
