When my fiance and I first got engaged I instantly started searching for the dress in every magazine I could get my hands on. I’ve been shopping once and I find myself falling in love heavily beaded ornate gowns, which tend to be on the more expensive end of my dress budget. My mother is pushing me to find one that I like and then order it online from one of the overseas (usually China) replica sites. I have read horror stories and also success stories. I was wondering if anyone had any luck with any of these sites? If so, would you mind posting pictures of the dress you received and also where you ordered it from? Thanks for all the help in advance!

Well I went for a replica of a Martin McCrea dress from Gioavonni’s Bridal Boutique and I HATED the result so much that I refused to wear the dress and ended up donating it to Salvation Army!. RESEARCH! Get recommendations!
DO NOT go by the glowing testimonials on the web site as they will only post positive reviews. SEARCH for consumer complaints and check with the BBB to see if the establishment has a rating. I WSIH I had done this! Gioavonni’s Bridal Boutique has a F rating with the BBB and had I thought to check, I would never had bought from them!
Now some brides have purchased AMAZING replica gowns. ALL I am saying is do a little research before buying something as important as a wedding dress! It also helps to actually try on some gowns at a bridal shop to see if a particular style suits your body type!

I had thought about doing the same thing. Then I fell in love with a lace dress with a heavily beaded bodice… Everything I read said that lace dresses were next to impossible to replicate, because they couldn’t match the lace.
I wrote to three different replica online stores and asked for pictures of what they actually made and not just a picture from the designer site. One never responded except to tell me they make the dress I wanted all the time. One said that the pictures did not do the dress justice and that the real gown would be more beautiful than in the pictures (okay…then why used the designer photo if that’s true?). The last one sent me pictures of a dress that was similar, but had a natural waist line instead of an empire and lace that wasn’t even close.
Don’t be afraid to ask them lots of questions, because they rarely refund your money if you don’t like the dress. They only give refunds if there is something “wrong” with the dress, and they define what is considered wrong.

Thanks girls! I never thought about checking the BBB. If it were up to me I would go the old fashioned route and purchase my dress from the retailers. I’m footing the bill for my wedding except for the dress. My mother offered to buy the dress and with funds as tight as they are I accepted. So I feel like a have to appease her a little. It’s good to know that they won’t refund for just not liking the dress as well because my mom assumed they would.

Overseas “designers” won’t be listed with the BBB.
Talk to your mom and let her know that it is next to impossible to get your money back from them, even if the dress doesn’t look like anything you ordered.
It is sad, but 99.9% of them are not reputable.

Someone else asked about this today and I’ll direct you to the same place I directed her.
You may want to check out the Milly Bridal board on Project wedding here. Or you can check out this one on bestdestinationwedding.com Both of them positive and negative reviews of Chinese dressmakers.
