I say start shopping!! :)
I bought my dress a few months ago, and we are not getting married until spring of 2014! I did buy a size that would leave me room to alter.
However, I am not a person who second-guesses her decisions, so when I got that "this is my dress" feeling, I felt no hesitation about buying it.
There is nothing wrong with shopping early, especially if you think it might take you awhile to find something you love. But if you plan to continue looking until the very last second, then you may not want to buy right away. You just have to do what you know is right for YOU.
Good luck dress shopping!
You might as well start shopping! At least you can get an idea of things you like and don't like. Maybe hold out on ordering for a bit though so you don't get the dreaded dress regret. Some new styles might also come out next year. But it's never too early to start looking! My dress could take up to 9 months to come in they told me, so definitely order by the 1 year mark to be safe.
@WolvLove: Start shopping NOW! I ordered my dress the week before Christmas, and was married in September. :) I probably had another month to spare though, so at least order your dress by the end of January. Happy shopping!
It never hurts to start too soon. Even if you aren't looking to find the 'one' its a fun 'I'm getting married' experience with your freinds and family. Also it's good to find what looks good on you versus what you like in mags. Then you have plenty of time to find the perfict one! Have Fun!
I have to disagree with the other posters. I just spent two and a half months looking at dresses, I can't imagine spending more time than that! It is SUCH a time sink. You said yourself that even if you found a dress you loved, you still wouldn't order it! If that's the case, you could end up shopping for a dress for over a year! Ugh! Don't do it! The more time you spend on it, the more emotion you'll put into it and it'll just become overwhelming! I can't even really talk to my family about dresses anymore, because they all can't believe that this has taken so long and so much of my energy!
@vermontia: LOL I"m so sorry to hear it's been such a headache for you! but I think that's what I might avoide by going early and getting an idea. I won't be "shopping" per say just getting ideas? The main issue is that I live 1,000+ miles from my mom and my maid of honor is in another city all together (another 500+miles) so when the three of us are in my hometown it's a good time to get a feel for what works on my body and doesn't....but I don't want to get overwhelemd.... ahhh decisions! lol
thanks for your advice! ;)
I said a year. I'm having a verrrry long engagement and I made a hasty choice and bought a dress I don't want anymore :) so from experience wait until the final moments you can If you like something from last season you can probably get it on sale and you may like something from the upcoming season even more!
Go now and try on a bunch of different styles. This way you won't fall in love with a certain dress online, stare at it for months, and then be disappointed when you finally try it on. But don't buy anything yet!!
@delirium.megans: lol thanks! I think that is what i'm going to do so I have a better idea of what I like and don't like. I won't buy yet promise! lol If i love one I'll wait until the summer when it might be on sale and if I don't LOVE one I'll just won't let myself get discouraged :)

I had originally posted this in the month twins but I think I might get some more help here!
Ok so I'm starting to get antsy and really want to go try on dresses.....here's the issue. I'm definitely the type of person that doesn't want to order a dress too soon because I want to see what else comes out before I HAVE to order (planning on orderying BY sept 2012). However, my body type is about as far from the models in the magazine it can be lol. I'm short and atheltic build so while I may love the ball gown on the model I don't want to keep cutting them out if when I try one on I look even shorter! (fi is a foot taller so I need to elongate as much as possible!) lol
I really want to go try on dresses when I'm home for the holidays with my mom to get a feel for what shapes/fabrics work with my body-type and which dont... but what if I LOVE one... I still don't want to order it....and what if I don't like ANY...then I'll get discouraged but aren't in a time-frame to go from shop to shop because it's not a rush....
ugh!!! anyone else waiting? already shopping? bought your dress??? help! lol
