Hi, I just recently started reading these boards because I got engaged a month ago, and I am impressed with all of your expertise! So here’s my question: I have a 1/3 carat brilliant cut solitaire ring that my fiance gave me with the idea that I would be ‘upgraded’ when we make more money (we are both very open about these things, we live together, and we are practical- it was my idea to get a small diamond on our engagement). I have an old mine cut diamond, passed down from my late grandmother, that is about one carat brilliant cut, and, rather than a traditional ring “upgrade,” I would like to have this old diamond set alongside my new diamond in a ring for when we actually get married. This old diamond is currently set in a gold necklace that I never wear. Does this sound practical (meaning, can you mix old mine diamonds and modern ones), and how expensive do you think it would be to create a simple 3-stone ring with the 2 diamonds I have plus another 1/3 carat? I am not overly concerned with getting a high quality diamond for the third stone, as the ones I have are not high quality. I think if this worked out it would make for a beautiful ring with a lot of history. BTW, I’ve already told my fiance about my idea and he found it to be a very good one. He knows that this diamond is the only thing I have of my grandmother’s. Thanks!
