I have a little house built in the 50s, and I’ve completely remodeled the inside. It looks great! But the outside was neglected for years before I bought it. It really needs new vinyl siding, and I’ve started to get quotes. Anywhere from $25,000 (ouch!) to $11,000. I didn’t think I could justify paying 11K so close to my wedding, but it really does need to be done in the next few years.
My dad knows someone who is an independent contractor and installs windows and does siding. He came by and quoted me at just under $7,000, which in comparison to the other two quotes is really good! The only problem is, I would need to pay upfront. Either half before the job and half after, or all at once, I’m not sure. But I know it’s not a monthly, managable $200 like it would’ve been with the bigger companies.
I have the money, but it would take a sizable chunk out of my savings. I know it’s gotta be done eventually, but the penny saver inside me is pouting a little. Is 7K a reasonable amount for a 1,500 sq foot half brick/half vinyl house?

Gahhhh you’re making me panic! LOL! I live in a house that’s only 100 sq ft smaller and we are well overdue for new siding. I knew it would be thousands but I was not thinking that much!! Though, it does depend on where you live. I’m in NC so labor and carpentry are muuuuch cheaper ($20-35/hour for carpentry whereas in the DC/VA/MD area it’s about $100-150/hour).

LaurenKK: Well, being the daughter of a contractor, I tend to want to go with his “guys” with remodeling and stuff. I could just hire any old guy off the street to do it, but that’s what the previous owner did and it looks hideous. They were definitely the people who hired the guy next door to do a quickie fix job and that’s why the house needed so much work. SO, my philosophy is, do it the right way.
Keep in mind, there’s more than just siding that needs to be done. You can tack siding on and not touch the soffet, but we need to strip it all the way down, and do the underside of the awning on the front porch. So, not a standard job.
Anyway, I’m in the southwest. Don’t know if that gives you an idea.
