Hi there, bees! Once again, I've made a resolution to lose weight, lol. I really hope I stick to it this time. I want to lose 60lbs in a year. To make it work, I'm going to try and focus on keeping myself MOTIVATED to have a healthy lifestyle.

Anyone else on the same boat? how much weight do you need to lose? How do you plan on losing weight?

I'll be keeping you updated with my progress, including pictures...and I'll be posting stuff here that might help you in keeping yourself motivated too!

    Wish me luck!

I'm in the same boat! I have slowly, yet steadily, been gaining weight since high school ended. I gained 15 lbs between high school and university and another 15 lbs after university. It is time to start losing! I am getting married in July and want to order my dressilyme dress in three months, so I am going to try my best to lose at least 15bs. I'm starting p90x on Wednesday, will be eating their healthy eating plan and going to start walking my dogs EVERY day instead of a few times a week.

I think my main problem is that I am great at living the healthy lifestyle... in fact, every time I have gained weight it has been 7lb gain, and then I plateau. The problem being that I only gain (I don't really lose!).

I am going to keep myself motivated by picturing the dress I LOVE in my mind! I can't wait to fit into a dress or two size smaller, look leaner, and not have so much "back flab". Also, my FI is trying to lose some weight so I'm hoping he will help me stay on track and encourage me to eat healthy and exercise!

I can't wait to see the progress you will make! Congrats on getting ready to do this and I'm sure lots of the bee's wil be eagerly watching your progress!

@takemyhand: thank you so much! Good luck on losing the weight, it's just 5lbs a month so it shouldn't be too hard! :)

Can I see your dream dress? I'm keeping my dream dress in mind too...I REALLY want to be able to wear something I love, not JUST something that matches my body type!

I bet it's easier when you have your FI to help encourage you. Mine's been hanging motivational posters all over the house haha and even offered to do Zumba sessions with me on the Wii! That should be interesting. He's underweight (not by choice. he weighs about 110lbs), but he's willing to help me out by joining in on the healthy lifestyle!

That's great you have support from him! I think i tmakes it easier when both people are commiting to starting a healthy lifestyle, rather than one eating healthy and the other eating junk all the time :) I have fallen head over heels in love with this dress

    And the back

It's a retired dress by Sophia Tolli called "Siena" and is very unpopular haha! It's hard to see in the pictures, but it has a champagne coloured ribbon running all throughout it. Problems with loving this dress are that I can't find it anywhere in Ontario, Canada to try it on since it retired in August and was not a hot style, I can't find it used ANYWHERE, and I am going to have to order it hoping it looks amazing from dressilyme. Here's hoping. I'm getting married in an old, restored mill that is now an art gallery and very rustic. In fact you get married outside in these huge stone walls with window cut outs. I love the romantic feel of this, as well as the length and lines across the bust and down the stomach and across the back.

Now enough about the dream dress I guess! But yeah, that is my biggest motivation-- to get into a smaller dress size so I look more like the model and less like a streched out photoshop of the model.

wow that is a stunning dress!! I love how flowy it is - almost ethereal :) the ribbons add a beautiful vintage touch ...sophia tolli is one of my favrourite designers. If you order it online, make sure they show you how they've made it before sending it, to make sure it's exactly the same.

I hope you get to wear the dress hun - it's beautiful. make sure you let us know about your progress!

I'm in the same boat, 2013 wedding and ~60# to lose. I need to get on board and stick with it. I'm terrified to try on dresses because I hate my body. I told myself that once I lose 30# I can go try on dresses. :) I'm subscribing to this and hoping it helps!

@bas0587: I hope you keep motivated and can't wait to see the progress you will make! Have you also tried sparkpeople.com. I've used it over the years for nutrition, exercise tips, community forumn or all of the above! (And it's free... hehehe)

I'm in the same boat too! I scheduled by first dress shopping appointment for exactly 10 weeks from now in order to motivate myself to lose ~15 lbs before then. It's going to take some hard work, but hopefully we can keep each other motivated! PM me if you need a virtual motivation partner!

I'm going to start looking at dresses in around April, just to see what style suits me best. Though I know I won't be anywhere near my target weight by then :/

I've taken this really seriously so far. I've made a fitness regime that I think I can actually stick with:

Monday - 50 min walk to work, vigorous housework

Tuesday - 50 min walk to work, Zumba

Wednesday - 50 min walk to work

Thursday - 50 min walk to work, Zumba

Friday - 50 min walk to work

Saturday - Vigorous housework, Zumba, Long walk/jog

    Sunday - Cycling

As for food, I'm going to be using the Slimming World diet. Gah, I LOVE their recipes!

    http://www.slimmingworld.com/

I'm at work right now, as soon as I get home, I'm posting my "before" picture and having an official first weigh-in. Feel free to join in!! :)

@bas0587: There is a style for EVERY single bride...I've seen some beautiful curvy brides on this forum, you just might be surprised at what you'll find if you just try on a few dresses! Finding a dress you like might even motivate you to fit into it better!

@Rica2002: Thanks! I really hope we can keep each other motivated! How cool is this, everyone's looking to lose about 5lbs a month, so it'll be easier to stay on track together.

I am on a weight loss journey as well but I need to lose my 60 lbs by August. Eek! I know it is doable. My first step is weighing all the food I eat. Then getting out and exercising. I lost 70lbs in ten months five years ago without exercise so adding in exercise this time should help right? So far I am down ten pounds but my arms look worse then ever. Not good when wearing a strapless dress!

Why I want to lose weight

When planning to lose weight, make sure you're doing it for the right reason, so that you don't lose motivation halfway through.

    1) Ensure that you're losing weight for YOURSELF, not for anyone else. If you try to lose weight to live up to your parents' expectations, or impress your friends, or to make your SO happy, you're not losing weight because YOU want to, and you're likely to lose motivation. Own your desire to lose weight. Make sure it's something you want. Who knows, maybe after you think about this you'll even realise that you're happy just the way you are.

    2) Why do you want to lose weight? are you sure that the goals you're setting can't be achieved NOW? Maybe the reasons behind losing weight are things that can be changed without losing weight. Are you trying to trim down so you can finally go to the beach with your friends? Well no one's stopping you from doing that now. Do you want to lose weight so you can dance when you go out clubbing? You can do that now. Do you weight so you can buy clothes based on your personality, rather than just what fits? That's a different story.

In other words, work on your self-confidence BEFORE or during weight loss. Because if you're trying to lose weight just because you feel ugly, you'll end up never being satisfied, which can turn into unhealthy habits or self-destructive behaviour. You don't have to lose weight to feel beautiful, so make sure you're doing all this because you love yourself, not because you hate yourself!

These are MY reasons for losing weight:

    • To buy clothes that I like

    • So I can wear my dream wedding dress

    • So I can wear the clothes that don't fit me anymore

    • To feel more energetic

    • To raise my chances of getting pregnant when we start TTC

    • To reduce chances of PCOS, diabetes, and lower my cholesterol levels

    • To feel more energetic

    • To battle depression

    • To be better in bed

    • So my FI can carry me to bed on our honeymoon

    • So I won't have to hear any more fat jokes

    • To be able to run a marathon

    • So that I don't get tired when wearing heels

    • To feel I have accomplished something I've wanted for years

    • To explore new types of healthy food

    • So it gets easier to ride a bike

    • To look better in photos

So what are your reasons to lose weight?

@Adams_bee: Thanks I will keep you updated. My weight struggle comes from prednisone and eating wheat. If I stop eating wheat it tends to just fall off at a rate of 1-3 lbs a week. So I figure if I add exercise and don't overeat or go crazy on the sugar I should be fine. I am going back on my doctor prescribed diet. Lots of protein, no wheat, certain foods in combination. I will try to post pics monthly.

In similar boat here. I had set the goal to loose 30 lbs after university I lost 15 easily and then gave up. This year (three years after giving up) I am going to loose 20 lbs before I start making my dress. My only chance to go fabric shopping is going to be this summer when we go home to visit family/take engagement photos so about 3-ish lbs a month and I should be golden.

I am doing it so I can:
Keep up with friends and SO on long hikes

Climb harder without carying the extra 20 lbs up the wall

fit in to my favorite sun dresses again

not be embarassed in a swim suit

not worry about my SO having to cary me when I am sick/hurt, ect.

start making my dream dress without habing to worry about altering it too much down the road. and look amazing in it when its done.

    Best of luck everybody!

A year ago, I ate like crap and I never exercised. Now I'm 30lbs lighter and have gained a lot of muscle... I've never felt better! This is a lifestyle I am glad I adapted for my wedding and will keep for the rest of my life. :)

@deathbydesign you look so much like I do now in your before pic! You look beautiful, but I understand why you changed your lifestyle as well. Thank you for the pictures! They give me hope that I can do this! :) My goal is to lose 15 (would love to lose 20) but maybe I will eventually get down and lose 30. In my adult life I have been super fit once and it was at 130lbs and I couldn't get lower after months of exercise and eating right, so I decided that was my "healthiest weight". Maybe a next goal for me!

    My reasons for losing weight:

    - to feel more confident in my own skin. I know I'm not signifcantly overweight, but I am close to getting that "watch your diet" warning from my doctor

    -to feel more energenic

-to be healthier. My family has a long history of diabetes and cancer. While I know that losing weight and being healthy won't STOP either of those things from happening, having a healthy lifestyle will help fend off some things

-to look amazing in my wedding dress (hey, what can I say? I want my pictures to show me when I feel my best, not when I feel uncomfortable)

-to be in the best shape I can be for work. I work as a teacher and am a role-model for almost 30 kids between 3 and 5 years old. I not only would love to have the chance to run as long as they can run for, but I don't want to have to make excuses as to why I am tired and can't play the ENTIRE game of soccer or why I can only play tag for 10 minutes and not 30. This kinda goes into my next point...

-when the time comes for me to be a mother, I want to have a set lifestyle that embraces family exercise (I plan on just being active with my FI after I finish the p90x) and healthy eating. That being said, I also don't want to be exactly like my aunt who forbid my cousins from eating any sugars and in high school they both went crazy with their food until they regulated again halfway through their university education.

Hey girl! I am definitely in the same boat! I lost 31 lb. in 2011, my goal for 2012 is 98 lb. - though I have a total of about ~130 left to lose that I'd like to see gone before my wedding.

I highly suggest joining a website like SparkPeople.com or MyFitnessPal.com to help you keep track of your nutrition and fitness :) Plus they both have really strong communities where you can get inspiration and such!

@Adams_bee: I would definitely suggest some weight training 3x a week so you can build up your muscles (if you're worried about becoming "too muscular", don't be - it takes concentrated effort to actually become ripped like some girls you see are, weight training will simply tighten your body and give you better endurance). You can't "spot train", so remember that the weight might come off more slowly from different body areas than others (I've lost 8 inches on my waist, but only 1 on my arms for example).

I want to lose weight to gain my muscles and strength back (school's made me a total stesscase with no time to work out *total excuse, but nearly valid*), to get in shape for my wedding in just over 2 months, to wake up early and be HAPPY about it (or at least energetic), and to be able to feel fit and confident in my bikini.

I love the strong and healthy feeling I get from consistently eating well and exercising, it's the consistent part that's hard for me.

This short commercial is my motivation when I'm trying to avoid exercising. Damn my excuses are lame.

I have 20 lbs to lose. I'm currently 145 and a size 8/9 (with my small frame and height whatever weight I gain you can +10 because that's how it looks on me). Add to it that I'm totally out of shape and I am just one unhappy bee right now. I would love to be 125 and a size 5/6 for my wedding, but for a general weight I think my happy place is 130, so even if I can get back there (and tone up) I'll be happy.

    Hi ladies,

This is just what I needed to read this morning. I want to loose 20lbs and tone up for my April 21st wedding.  I need to take my dress in on March 10th for the alterations so I dont have much to to get on track but this is real now.  The holidays are over and done with. I have no excuse.

I need to do this for me and only me.

@DeathByDesign: Wow you look amazing! Congratulations. Your pictures are so inspiring.

    My reasons for losing weight:

    - look better in my wedding dress

    - have more muscle so I can eat more and burn more calories naturally

    - sleep better at night

    - fit into my clothes, not have to buy new ones

honestly, I dont pay attention to the numbers. I just want to loose enough weight so I look more tone in my dress. I have never been the super skinny one, but I am at the heaviest I have ever been. I eat with my Fiance...... and he cooks alot and its YUMMIE! I just need to do portion control because I dont think I can stop eating yummie foods. I am ADDICTED to In and Out and Soda... those two alone would probably help if I quit, but I dont want to be miserable! so. I have an elipitical at home, very nice one. so. I will limit my intake of soda cause i just cant give it up, and run every weekday and weekend if we are home. if numbers have to come into play, i would say it would be nice to be where I was when I met my fiance, about 15 pounds lighter. I am not trying to be unrealistic here. I dont even own a scale! I always played sports growing up and I know I can do it, I am not trying to become skinner than I was.

My goal is to lose 30lbs in the next year- which I think is pretty reasonable.  I want to lose weight because I have lingering baby weight and want to not feel as tired after doing physical activity.

@DeathByDesign: omg you look gorgeous! well done, and congrats.

Anyway, I'm back to post my "before" pictures. This is the first time i've EVER taken a photo of myself in my underwear, let alone post in on the internet! But I want to take this seriously, as a way to officially say goodbye to this body...so I can start working on the new me. So here goes (it's not nice...sorry...):

    Yikes.

Anyway. Ladies, this is me at 180lbs. :'( ...As you can see, there's a lot to be done. But you gotta start from somewhere, I guess. Thanks for hearing me out, bees!

@Adams_bee: Good Luck on taking the initiative to lose weight!  I want to lose 30-35 lbs.  I will be getting married the summer of 2013, so I want to get a head start.  I have been working out and changing my diet for the past 2 weeks.  This is what I have been doing:

    1.  Drinking 8-10 glasses of water daily (no soda, not even diet)  2.  Drinking whey protein isolate shakes daily  3.  Following Weight Watchers online-they reduced the points allowance for quicker weight loss   4.  Treadmill sprints 2-3 times weekly   5.  Kettlebell training 3 times weekly.  I plan to add 1 or 2 Spin Cycle sessions weekly and also ab exercises.

    Good Luck!

Hi bees!!! I'm back at work, after a day of cycling yesterday with my FI. I can barely walk, my thighs are KILLING me. I guess it goes to show how unfit I am....I hope I manage to get used to cycling so I can work on my thunder thighs! :)

It hurts like hell, but I'm going to TRY to get another workout done today, so I don't break the routine.

here's your motivation pic for today! xx

This might sound crazy lol but when I was a senior in HS, my physics/chemistry teacher (he taught both classes) told us that drinking really cold water helps with weight loss. I don't remember the reasoning behind it lol.I'm not necessarily trying to lose weight, but I'd like to be more in shape for my job (military) and for the wedding. I only want to lose a few pounds. Mostly just get more toned and in shape.

I'm just reverting back to the exercises we did in basic training. Not what we did for PT, just the exercises we did whenever we had down time and wanted to get in some more practice for our evals.

They're called 1x3s. They're really simple. It's for pushups and situps. For our evals, we have one minute to do as many pushups as possible, and then one minute for situps. So to increase the amount we could do, they taught us the following:

    1) Time yourself for one minute. In that minute, do as many pushups with correct form as you can, keeping count. (Example: 15 correct pushups)

    2) Take that number and divide by 3. (So 15/3=5)

    3) Then do that number of pushups in a one minute interval. You can do them slowly, spaced out over the minute, or quickly. Any time left over after you complete that number, use to rest. (So if you do 5 in the first 15 seconds, use the last 45 to rest) Do this step a total of 3 times. (It's the same process for situps.)

You can do it a few times in a day, or just once a day, or whatever you like. Just practice good form and don't over do it. Don't worry if you only start with really small numbers, either. If you stick with it and are honest about using correct form, you'll work your way up to higher numbers. It's really simple and pretty quick.

When we ran in basic, it was roughly 35 minutes total. The first 15 were running as hard as you could at a steady pace. The next 15 were self paced, but no walking. The last 5ish were sprints. We would sprint as fast as we could for 45 seconds I think and then walk for 45 seconds, and repeat that over and over until the last 5 minutes were up.

I've also cut pop out of my diet, which also helped me have fewer headaches.

I apologize for the length of this post!

ETA: Also, try to give your body a day of rest when exercising so you don't exhaust your body.

@AubByAub: The theory that cold water (or food, for that matter) burns more calories comes from the fact that calories are measures of energy and creating heat expels/uses energy, ergo creating heat burns calories. We were told the same thing, that since the body has to work more to bring the cold input up to body temperature before it can make use of the stored energy in the food/drink, you burn more calories in total.

I think it's a neglible amount, though, so I wouldn't rely on it as a strategy. Though I do find that it's easier to drink water when it's ice-cold.

(And no, this doesn't mean you can eat cold pizza as a way of getting around making better choices, lol.)

FI and I are both wanting to get healther this year, but that doesn't equate to a particular measurement on the scale (though our doctors would probably disagree--that's okay, they're not the ones living in our bodies on the day to day). It's about fitting into our clothes better, feeling lighter and having more energy.

Like other bees I'm using MyFitnessPal to log what I eat. We cook from scratch a lot and stick to minimally processed foods but we got bad about portion sizes and I'm a snacker, especially after work/before supper. Logging food makes me more aware of what and how much I'm eating and the calorie counter on MFP makes it like a game each day, to see how close I can get to my number without going over.

Now to work some exercise into the routine (that's always my tough spot, but I'll figure something out).

hi girls, I started at almost 200lbs last september. i am at 165 at the moment and have just kicked it up a notch (lost 6lbs in 2 weeks) i am hoping to get somewhere near the 140 mark. Basically im eating clean and exercising 6 out of seven days. I used to do this, but stopped when i moved in with my SO.. so ive got ten weeks to get down to 140. also muscle burns more calories, so the more muscle you build the more you will burn!!! Anyways im just letting you know it is really possible, I am going to get down to 140!!!

Hey ladies! I was wondering how everyone is doing? Had anyone started exercising yet? I started P90X (just the exercising, not the diet) on Thursday and OMFG it is HARD! You actually have to pass a fitness test to do the program. And I barely passed! Anyways, it is really amazing! I have actually lost almost 4lbs in the past few days just following the program and eating healthy. Super stoked! Anyone else having success? Started? Have some motivational advice?

Hi girls! Thought I'd give you an update on what's going on. I'm so glad to see a positive response from such determined people!

I had my first weekly weigh-in this morning....and I'm a bit bummed. Didn't lose any weight at all. :( I didn't gain any either...but it was still a hard blow to my motivation. I guess I'm just not trying hard enough. I need to exercise more, and eat healthier.

I have this huge problem with motivation, does anyone else here get this? I start out really determined, but as soon as I get tempted with chocolate or to ditch exercise, suddenly losing weight doesn't seem important anymore and I totally lose focus. :( FI has been incredibly supportive but I'm so inconsistent - one minute i'm eating healthy, the next i'm scoffing down deep-fried chicken.

I really need to make amends this week ... :/
