What about the Summit House? They are kinda pricey for food but they have a cute separate building for events and I've seen weddings there before. It seems like most restaurants (at least in Chicago) just give you a minimum food and beverage cost and so you skip the whole venue fee. So maybe it would end up being cheaper. Plus their food is yummy!
Here is the link to the restaurant:

I don't know what your budget is but it says 13,000 minimum :/
How about the Orange Hill Restaurant? Or The Reef on the Water - they have banquet rooms but they also have smaller private rooms in the restaurant.
If you could give any more details (like what part of SoCal, beach/city/mountains/etc...) that would be helpful. I looked into receptions at Roccoco (part of Cafe Santorini in Pasadena) and Duke's Malibu at various points, and they were both pretty reasonable (Duke's a bit pricier, alcohol is a total pain there and there are lots of add-on fees, but still not totally outrageous) and Roccoco was awesome but only had space for 130 people and a dance floor (I have 165 on the guestlist).
Yes, more info please. I've been to a couple weddings at the Odyssey in Granada Hills which were nice. Also, there are many "banquet halls" in the Glendale/Burbank area... I most recently went to one at the Ambrosia Restaurant, which was very "Armenian-centric", but very pretty and nice. Also, as marigold mentioned, there is the Rococo room at Cafe Santorini in Pasadena. I went to a wedding there, and it's more intimate, but still a very cute space. Also, check out the Castaway restaurant in Burbank. I've never been to a wedding there, but I've heard good things about it. What exactly are you looking for? There are TONS of Chinese banquet halls/restaurants if you're wanting a traditional 10-course Chinese banquet.
Cicada in Downtown LA
The Odessy in Granada Hills
The Castway in Burbank
Shanghi Red's in Marina Del Rey
Duke's in Malibu
Sunset in Malibu
really there are tons.

this is where i'm having mine.
Sambi's in Downey is AMAZING. They have private tables near the fountain in the middle depending on how many people you're having. They have a live piano player too. This restaurant has some yummy food! Mostly japanese though, but the atmosphere is way elegant. I think it's called Sambi's of Tokyo
Wow, I just saw how to respond to my own post (DURRR!) sorry for the delay and thanks for the responses! I'm really open on what area of So Cal, we were going to go to vegas so distance isn't a big issue. We're in LA so preferably around there. I'm not very picky about the scenery either, we want an outdoor reception preferably something green, but beach works too. Mostly I'm just looking for affordable at this point! My number 1 right now is Swisspark in Whittier, pretty good prices but just trying to see if I can find a better deal and thought restaraunts would be the way to go, maybe not!
Any ideas are still appreciated!
And Rosie! Summit House is GORGEOUS! I'm going to look at it Sunday! Thanks!
I second Cicada in Downtown LA.
I think Pinot downtown does the food for their weddings near the library.

Hey bees!
Just curious if anybody out there is planning or has had or been to a successful restaraunt reception? It sounds like the perfect plan for our budget and what we're wanting for our wedding, but I don't know many restaraunts that would have the right setup or not be ridiculously expensive. In fact even if you haven't been to a wedding there, if anyone knows any restaraunts that look like they could possibly be a good reception venue can you pretty please let me know?
Thanks so much!
