My wedding is 5 months out and I still have not chosen a place for my honeymoon. I know my fiance and I are set on a all inclusive resort somewhere in Punta Cana but there are so many to choose from! I have been looking at Breathless Punta Cana and Excellence resort but I can’t make a decision to save my life! Any suggestions!?

jessica.farias.5249: we stayed at the Gran Bahia and it was awesome! Don’t know if that helps!

do not stress about it. Almost all AI’s are about the same with in the same class.
All the 5 star resorts are going to offer a la carte dinners, water sports, beach etc. The tours operated from them are identical, because all the tour groups go to all the hotels.
I used to think it mattered, but have been on more then 25 AI trips, and it really does not.

jessica.farias.5249: We stayed at Sanctuary Cap Cana in Punta Cana, and had an absolutely amazing time, would highly recommend it. It’s very much geared towards couples, we met several other couples on their honeymoon. It’s a gorgeous resort, all the rooms are oceanview, even their most basic suite was more than adequate, and some of their higher end rooms are unbelievable. Food was very good for an all inclusive resort.
Definitely check it out – here are some photos I took 🙂 FYI David Ortiz of the Boston Red Sox hosted his celebrity golf tournament at this resort – he booked out the majority of the resort for attendees. Some famous faces had started showing up the night before we left, so you know it must be a pretty fab resort!

We stayed at Excellence in January. IT was AWESOME. We liked the food and the service was wonderful.
Definitely do the Excellence Club if you go to Excellence!

I didn’t like Breathless. I was there a couple of months ago because it was almost too cheap to give up because of their grand opening deal. I went with very low expectations because it had only been opened for a couple of months, and it wouldn’t go back. We had one of the club beach front rooms. Beautiful property, beautiful beach, but the food is only good at a couple of restaurants (and their menus don’t change), and their staff is not that great. If I went back I would stay at Excellence or (depending upon budget) Zoetry.

lealorali: I would have to disagree. Out of the 10 or so AI trips I’ve been on, the Grand Bahia was the most disappointing resort. I thought the food here was terrible. And there were tons of bugs (probably was the season for them and not the hotel’s fault but it still gives me bad memories of the place). The shows here were very average too. It was also a challenge to schedule any a la carte meals above their maximum number for the week. We ended up having very late reservations some nights and missed the shows. This was never an issue as any other AI I’ve been to. I’ve been able to eat at a different restaurants every night of the week at reasonable times in other AIs. But it’s also a huge resort composed of several smallers ones so maybe we stayed at different ones.

I stayed at the majestic colonial and it has easily been the nicest resort I’ve stayed in! The beaches in Punta Cana are absolutely beautiful!

lealorali: I loved Grand Bahia. My parents went a different year and loved it too. It has several upgrades too if you want a more luxerious experience. The food was good, no issues there.

L-girl: I actually sorta agree with you now that I think about it.. it wasn’t the most “upscale” resort by any means; the food was definitely mediocre after a while. The reservation system was absurd (remember how the restaurants were booked yet there was no one there?!)
Just average I guess?

lealorali: Yes! I remember having 9pm reservations at the hibachi place and having to wait for 45 minutes to be seated even though there were at least 2 open hibachi tables that we could see! The waiting area was packed and we couldn’t even sit while waiting. Some people became so frustrated (and hungry) that they left. Overall, I thought this place did not measure up to similarly rated resorts that I’ve been to. I’m not comparing it to 6 star resorts in Cabo but only to ones in the same category.

My Fiance and I have been to Punta Cana 2 times. The first we stayed at the Iberostar Grand Bavaro Hotel. The 2nd we stayed at Excellence. We personally preferred the Iberostar grand, we thought the service was far superior, the quality of the resort was much nicer and overall for a honeymoon I would recommend that hotel. We also have had friends that stayed at the Majestic Elegance and had great things to say about it. Overall – because they are all all-inclusive and there is not a ton to do off the resorts, the experience is going to be farily similar with a 5 star resort. You need to think about if you want to be on the Atlantic side of the island or Pacific side because the beach will be drastically different (Excellence has rougher waters, there was a red flad out when we were there) – Iberostar was much calmer. I have written detailed reviews on both resorts if you want me to send them to you send me a private message! Overall, Punta Cana is gorgeous and the beaches are some of the most amazing I have ever seen!

MissDenop: Hi! My FI are having a discussion right now about going to either the Iberostar or Excellence in Punta Cana for our honeymoon. I like the look of Iberostar, the ship, the resort, the beach but didn’t like that there weren’t that many choices for restaurants. My FI loves the idea of having a private terrace with your own private pool at the excellence and that there is more food and bars to visit. Although I’ve heard the water is rough, is it always? Could you send me your written reviews? Thanks!
