My jeweler told me that you should only do it about once a year since everytime they polish off the scratches it kind of takes a tiny layer of coating off your ring therefore wearing it off and making it thinner. Of course it will not make much of a difference now but the longer you do it the bigger toll it will take on your ring. Again this was per the jewler at Jared’s lol so I don’t know how valid his explanation is.

I don’t understand why it would mess up your ring over time.  You are just putting a layer on top.  It’s like putting clear polish over your nails.  Putting more on more frequently doesn’t mess your natural nail.

Wait, so they polish the old rhodium off before replating?

From what they told me they have to polish off the scratches first and then coat it.

Hmm I’m not sure, have you checked Pricescope for some answers?

I just read on a jewelers “how to plate” website that stress on the rhodium layer will cause small cracks that can grow.  Impurities can make their way into the cracks and cause pitting on the gold.

Also, the final finish on the rhodium plated ring depends on the finish on the white gold before plating.  So if the white gold is dull to begin with, it will remain dull but more “white” after plating.  That is why they need to buff off the rhodium and create a shiny surface on the white gold before plating.

You need to have your ring replated every 6-12 months to make sure the rhodium layer remains in good shape.  But you probably don’t want to replate in excess since replating=buffing.
